Mondrian Miami
- Style
- Whimsical waterside wonderland
- Setting
- Sittin’ on the dock of a bay
‘Boutique’ may be a bit of a stretch to describe the 335-room South Beach sensation Mondrian Miami, but Marcel Wanders’ sleek and Starck-ish interiors lend the hotel an unexpected air of intimacy.

In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- We loved the shoreline panoramas from spacious Bay View Studio 1418, as well as its private terrace, trompe l’oeil mirror and patterned Delft tiling. 1410, a Deluxe Bay View Suite, is even larger, with equally head-turning views. For out-and-out indulgence, the hotel’s four Tower Suites are absurdly luxurious, with terraces stretching out an immense 2,000 square feet, deep soaking tubs and striking, full-wall artworks. Oh, and full butler service.
- Packing tips
- A capsule wardrobe of bright, brash colours – in Miami, the clothes have to be louder than the music.
- Also
- Whether you’ve forgotten the shampoo, or urgently need a Bentley, or fancying buying a penthouse, the wall-sized vending machine in the lobby can supply it. Just slip your card in and make your selection.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- The white and whimsical Asia de Cuba spills out into the lobby and, as the name suggests, fuses Asian and Latin cuisine to create intensely flavoured dishes, such as calamari salad with chayote, palm hearts, banana and cashews, and tuna tartare with olives and almonds. Surrounded by etched mirrors and candelabra, one lengthy dining table is bookended by high-backed ‘whisper chairs’ that enable diners at either end of the table to hear each other speak at the lowest volumes.
- Dress code
- Go for bold Balenciaga or Moschino cocktail dresses. And remember, there’s no upper limit on heel length or sunglasses size here.
- Top table
- For real romance, rent on of the poolside cabanas and arrange to dine in there. Alternatively, secure a pot on the terrace for Biscayne Bay views while you eat.
- Last orders
- Dinner’s available until 11pm during the week and midnight at weekends. The bar buzzes on till 2am (4am on Fridays, and 3am on Saturdays).
- Room service
- A full 24-hour menu is available.
- Hotel bar
- One of Miami’s hippest hangouts, Sunset Lounge is named and decorated in honour of the original Mondrian on Sunset boulevard, with etched mirrored walls, a slick black-and-white colour theme. There are regular DJ nights, and the mixed berry caipirhinas are beauty in a glass.

Local restaurants
At Mondrian’s sister hotel, Shore Club on Miami Beach, Nobu (+1 305 695 3232) is a one-stop-shop for spectacular sushi. Also at Shore Club, Robert DeNiro’s gently rustic Ago (www.agorestaurant.com) serves up accomplished Italian dishes from chef Agostini Sciandri. Prime Italian (+1 305 695 8484) on Ocean Drive is the pasta-toting kid brother of the Miami steakhouse institution Prime One Twelve (www.prime112.com) nearby – and both are worthy of a reservation. Osteria del Teatro (+1 305 538 7850) on Washington Avenue may look unassuming, but has a wonderful way with Italian dishes. Try Joe's Stone Crab (+1 305 673 0365) on the same street for quality crustacea.
Local bars
The elite and exclusive Florida Room (+1 305 673 1010) at Delano is a classic SoBe piano lounge, adorned with a smoky bronze ceiling and dominating chandeliers. Star pianists regularly grace the keys, and international DJs hit the decks.
Worth getting out of bed for
As well as its own boat launch, allowing guests to come and go via water, Mondrian Miami can also supply jet skis, boats and other watersports equipment so you can make the most of the Bay. Although the hotel’s not on the beach itself, you’ll get passes to sister-hotel Delano’s beach club so you can sun-kiss yourself silly on the sand. The South Beach Strip is close by too, so you can strike out for the shops to seek out your perfect Miami wardrobe.
