In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- Ocean View rooms have private balconies looking out across the sea; the Bungalows are perfect for sun-seekers, with direct access to the pool area and outdoor showers on their private terraces. We also love the oversize bathroom in the Deluxe Ocean Suite – there’s even an infinity-edged soaking tub. The with-bells-on two-bedroom Penthouse Suite has its own elevator, rooftop garden terrace, wraparound windows and restaurant-quality kitchen.
- Packing tips
- Get ready to mingle with Miami’s beautiful people: bikinis at dawn (or martinis at lunchtime if you’re a bit more like us) means your slickest swimwear is required.
- Also
- Designed by Jacques Garcia, Spa V features an atmospheric unisex hammam, Vichy showers and a suite dedicated to decadent couples’ treatments. Beauty queens should book the super-luxe Gold Facial and Body Bronze; stressed-out execs will love the BlackBerry Addict hand treatments and Relax Me massages.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- With its circular polished-marble bar, open kitchen and exotic fusion menu, good-looking Vix Restaurant is the main draw for diners, although you can also do light lunch at the 2nd-floor terrace bar, Vue.
- Dress code
- Chi chi glam – why not sling on some vintage Mary-Janes, high-waisted trousers and a boat-necked blouse for that 1930s holiday look?
- Top table
- Out on Vue’s terrace for breakfast or lunch (try the Lobster Eggs Benedict); for dinner, book the Chef’s table for the five-course tasting menu (from US$75 a head).
- Last orders
- Vix, Vue and the Passage Bar are open until midnight.
- Room service
- Available for breakfast (7am–12 noon), dinner (5pm–midnight) and after-hours snacks (midnight–7am). Rack it up a notch with private in-room dining from Vix restaurant on Sunday or Monday nights.
- Hotel bar
- Bringing a hint of playfulness to its 30s-feel cocktail lounge, Bar V has a curving bar that emulates a chunk of ice – have fun sliding your vodka martinis to each other along it, or behave like grown-ups with elegant flutes of champagne. If ice bars leave you cold, head outside to Vue and have some bar snacks with your Acai Mojitos while you’re there.

Local restaurants
Formerly the Versace residence, Casa Casuarina is right next door to Hotel Victor and has a splendid Mediterranean restaurant – Loftin’s 1116 Ocean (+1 305 672 6604); worth visiting just to rubber-neck at Miami’s beautiful people – and the deliciously OTT decor. Devito South Beach (owned by – yes, you guessed it – Danny De Vito) on Ocean Drive is a SoBe see-and-be-seen Italian restaurant (+1 305 531 0911). Don’t take our word for it: let the man himself explain…
Local bars
News Café is a popular 24-hour bar, diner and corner shop at 800 Ocean Drive (+1 305 538 6397) – pop in for your daily caffeine and headlines fix, or go after-hours for low-key cocktails.
Local cafes
Something of a local legend, Cuban snack-shack David’s Café is cheap, tasty and open 24/7. So good, they opened it twice: visit the original at 1058 Collins Avenue (+1 305 534 8736), or David’s Café II at 1654 Meridian Avenue (+1 305 672 8707).
Nightlife
Just down the road from Hotel Victor, Mango’s Tropical Café at 900 Ocean Drive (+1 305 673 4422) offers light-hearted night-time entertainment, with all-singin’ all-dancin’ Latin showgal action and mariachi music. Keep tongues firmly in cheeks, please, and you’ll have a dandy time.
Diary
Late September–Early October The Miami Carnival is one of America’s biggest street festivals, the highlight of which is the carnival parade in early October. There are lots of events in the run-up to the parade, including the International Caribbean Music Festival in Bicentennial Park. December Art Basel Miami Beach is one of the world’s foremost annual art festivals and is centred on South Beach, bringing with it special exhibitions, events and parties.
