In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- All rooms feature Philippe Starck’s hallmark minimalist white leather-and-linen decor, with accent colours provided by oversize potted plants, Connemara marble worktops and pale grey marble in the bathrooms. Get an Ocean View room if you can – the view is worth shelling out for. Alcove rooms have city views, but make up for it with slick bench seating under the windows. One-Bedroom Suites have vast marble soaking tubs; but we love the Terrace Suites for their private decked sunbathing area. If you’re splashing out on one of the special duplex bungalows, opt for bungalow one (just outside the Orchard) or eight (on the beachfront) for a tiny bit more privacy and quiet – poolside is a party zone day and night.
- Packing tips
- Boys, bring your best pair of Vilebrequin swimshorts; girls, break out the super-chic Heidi Klein. There’s a variety of water sports on offer on the beach, so bring one of those bungee cords if you don’t want to lose your shades…
- Also
- You can smoke on the restaurant terrace, poolside and in designated smoking rooms. Pets cannot be accommodated.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- Acclaimed Blue Door sees chef Claude Troisgros deliver French-Brazilian fusion food in a glamorous setting that spills out around the pool. Now try not to spill your red wine over all that pristine white linen and leather… Ogle your food while it’s being prepared in the open kitchen at Blue Sea, Delano’s stylish-looking off-lobby sushi and caviar bar. There’s also a casual Mediterranean poolside bistro.
- Dress code
- Dress up, up, up: it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that bling…
- Top table
- On the terrace at Blue Door, so you can stargaze (and check out the night sky, too…). For the ultimate in romance, book a candlelit poolside cabana for dinner (US$195, plus US$90 a person for the special set menu, excluding drinks.)
- Last orders
- Last drinks are poured at 2am on Sundays and Mondays, but you can still sip cocktails at 4am the rest of the week. In Blue Door, breakfast is served 7am–11.30am; lunch till 4pm; and dinner 7pm until midnight. Blue Sea is open Tuesdays–Thursdays, 7pm-
- Room service
- A 24-hour room service menu means daybreak eggs or late-night chicken soup for the soul are available round the clock.
- Hotel bar
- The Rose Bar just off Blue Door restaurant is your classic cocktail bar set-up: mood-setting pink lighting, with a marble-topped counter between you and those rows of polished liquor bottles. The Florida Room is like some long-forgotten sexy speakeasy lounge, where chandeliers and conversations sparkle, and a pianist tickles the ivories on a splendid glass-effect piano.

Local restaurants
Casa Tua's excellent restaurant serves classic Italian and Mediterranean food – chef Sergio Sigala's speciality is risotto, and there's a well-matched list of fine wines. Quattro Gastronomia Italia (+1 305 531 4833) on Lincoln Road is a more modern Italian treasure, with eye-popping Milanese decor. If the weather's good, try to get a table in the romantic garden. Bond St (+1 305 398 1806) at the hip Townhouse hotel on Collins prepares excellent sushi and Bloody Marys carefully crafted with sake. Just across the road is The Setai hotel (+1 305 520 6000), the height of South Beach opulence and excess; its restaurant show kitchen produces excellent Thai, Chinese and Indian dishes. Nobu (+1 305 695 3100) at the Shore Club serves unparalleled Asian cusine; the rock shrimp tempura is a signature dish. Also at the Shore Club, Ago (+1 305 695 3226) is a well-regarded Italian restaurant owned by Robert de Niro; get a table outside.
Local cafes
Also on Lincoln Road, Segafredo (+1 305 673 0047) is a decent café cum trendy bar and restaurant.
Worth getting out of bed for
The Delano's spa, Agua, is a real treat – just lounging on its rooftop terrace is a treat. if you can't be bothered to shlepp up there, in-room spa treatments can be arranged too. For the body beautiful (or those who like water sports), there's a variety of in-sea activity on offer at the Delano beach. Go further with boat charters, fishing trips or jet skis (www.jetskiz.com).
Take a trip to Bal Harbour's luxury shops for the ultimate shopping experience - plenty of restaurants there, too, if you find you're flagging.
