In the know

Our favourite rooms
The popular 'X-Large' corner rooms – they're bigger and have great balconies. 'Sunset' rooms on the second and third floors have views of Sunset Boulevard and the Hollywood hills; most have a balcony or patio. 'Medium' rooms all have a patio or balcony, and more attractive views over the city or poolside; go for a city view if you want a quieter room, as rooms facing the pool can be noisy. 'Large' rooms have two double beds and private balconies with LA views to die for. The suites are killer, with wrap-around balconies, panoramic city views and a shower big enough to throw a small party in.
Packing tips
Lots of swimwear. Leave the suit at home, you'll feel totally out of place wearing one here. Massive shades, however, are vital for poolside and street cred.

Food & drink

The Standard Hollywood, food & drink
Hotel restaurant
The restaurant, just off the lobby near the hotel entrance, is styled as an ultra-hip diner, with overstuffed leather booth seating and a high counter and dishes up international comfort food, from sushi to lasagne via the great American burger.
Dress code
Keep it casual – and a little bit sexy.
Top table
Cosy up in one of the semi-circular booths, or take a poolside café table in the glorious Californian sunshine.
Last orders
The bar winds it down at 1.30am, but the diner stays open 24/7.
Room service
24 hours, with the same menu as the diner.
Hotel bar
The Standard Lounge's subtle 70s disco vibe has made it a popular postmodern venue with the beautiful people of LA. Laid-back tunes and live DJs make those signature martinis slip down dangerously fast.

Local restaurants

Chateau Marmont (+1 323 656 1010) on Sunset Boulevard has a restaurant every bit as glamorous as the famous hotel; try the Kobe beef burger and ask for a table in the patio bar. Dakota (+1 323 769 8888) at the Roosevelt hotel on Hollywood Boulevard is a dark and dramatic steakhouse with brown velvet seats and a dressed-up retro feel. LA’s best Mexican food can arguably be found at family-owned El Cholo at 1121 South Western Avenue (+1 323 734 2773), where the menu has changed little since 1927. Gwen Stefani and Jake Gyllenhaal are fans of Mozza (+1 323 297 0101) on North Highland at Melrose Avenue, a buzzy, high-brow pizzeria with top-notch Italian fare.

Local cafes

On Sunset, the Fountain Coffee Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel has a 1940s retro atmosphere from the golden age of film. For wonderful space-age ‘Googie’ architecture and decent coffee, try Norms on North La Cienega Boulevard in West Hollywood.
