In the know

Our favourite rooms
All Suites and Residences have fitted kitchens and spacious white and grey carrera marble bathrooms with rain shower heads; most have a private terrace or balcony as well. Suite 302 has a great view of LA’s streets. The Studio Residences are good value for money, but our favourite rooms are the larger, split-level loft-style Two-Bedroom Residences, with screened-in balconies and a shower big enough for four. Three-Bedroom Residences also have soaking tubs and separate lift access from the garage. How very Bat Cave.
Packing tips
If you have an addiction to a particular coffee brand or condiment, you can indulge yourself in your own kitchen. You can sunbathe on the rooftop or private terrace, and you’re not far from Santa Monica, so bring swimwear.
Also
Local calls are free, so if you’re not getting the concierge to make restaurant reservations or book taxis for you, don’t use your mobile!

Food & drink

Food and drink, Palihouse Holloway hotel, Los Angeles, USA
Hotel restaurant
The Hall Courtyard Brasserie combines classic New York with French bistro: white tiles, round bar tables, dark woods and a French-California fusion menu: try truffle chicken, cote du boeuf and smoked wild salmon terrine. The outdoor dining courtyard is lovely, and there’s also a cool oyster and espresso bar for daytime dining or drinks.
Dress code
If you’ve brought a cocktail dress with you, wear it – but you’ll be just as happy in dressed-up jeans and heels.
Top table
Book an al fresco table for the most romantic ambience at dinner, but sit by the bar for cocktails, tea or breakfast.
Last orders
Last drinks at the bar are poured at midnight (12.30 on weekends). Breakfast, 7am–11am; lunch, 11am–3pm; dinner, 6pm–11pm. Weekend brunch, 11am–4pm.
Room service
A limited selection from the main restaurant menu is available 7am–11pm; Palihouse Holloway’s housemaster is happy to order you takeout outside room service hours (you do have a kitchen, after all).
Hotel bar
The Bar at the Lounge has live DJs at weekends spinning a laid-back soundtrack of eclectic lounge music; order yourself a Writer’s Block cocktail (or a couple of beers) and kick back for a few hours. You can also have drinks at the French-flavoured Hall bar – anyone for Pastis?

Local restaurants

Right down the block at 8447 Santa Monica Boulevard is local favourite: Barney’s Beanery (+1 323 654 2287). A family-friendly hangout by day, this spot is more of a biker’s heaven by night, with lots of beers and rowdy patrons, but it is fun. For brunch, you can’t beat Hugo’s (+1 323 654 3993). This West Hollywood hotspot at 8401 Santa Monica Boulevard has a legendary tea menu and admirable sustainability policy. The breakfast pastas are outstanding (if a bit confusing) and there’s plenty of choice for health-conscious veggies and vegans. Love sushi? Try Ari-Ya at 8730 Santa Monica Boulevard (+1 310 854 6212): order the Shishito and the OMG roll.

Local cafes

Another great brunch spot, Basix Café (+1 323 848 2460) at 8333 Santa Monica Boulevard is a good one for Mediterranean dishes, mimosas and pumpkin pancakes.

Nightlife

Check out hip music venue The Hotel Café at 1623 North Cahuenga Boulevard– great live acts and you can eat there, too.

Worth getting out of bed for

Go hiking at Runyon Canyon - this place has trails that can take one or two hours, depending on the route. People hike here with their dogs, so be prepared for that (or bring your own pooch pack, and make like the Dog Whisperer…). Hollywood & Highland is a fun shopping centre right on the Walk of Fame (Hollywood Boulevard); it’s also where Graumann’s Chinese Theatre is. The Hollywood Bowl (www.hollywoodbowl.com) is an outdoor venue with great acoustics – book tickets to see the LA Philharmonia there.

Wow factor

Check out those romantic cross-town views from the rooftop terrace! Perfect for sophisticated and intimate weddings, Palihouse Holloway also has a great location close to City Hall (another popular venue for the actual wedding ceremony). We love the courtyard restaurant and you could hold a wonderful wedding reception there.

Need to know

Special rates can be negotiated for the bride and groom’s family members. Up to 50 guests (or 25 suites) can be booked in for the wedding; the housemaster and concierge will make sure all your guests are co-ordinated and looked after properly before and during their stay.

Inspiration

Palihouse can arrange a special breakfast in bed for the bride and groom, with champagne, strawberries and lashings of rose petals in their suite.

Best for
Any age.

Recommended rooms

Since all the residences and suites are designed to be a home from home, and have fitted kitchens, they’re all suitable – it’s more a question of how big your family is and how much space you need.

Activities

There are a couple of bicycles to borrow but there are plenty of fun things to do outside your door: popular family attractions include the La Brea Tar Pits, Santa Monica Pier, Graumann’s Chinese Theatre and Warner Brothers Studios. Pinks Hot Dogs or Barneys Beanery are good child-friendly eateries nearby.

Swimming pool

No, although there is a roof terrace for lazy sunny days.

Meals

Since you’ve got your own kitchen, you’re free to indulge your kids’ every crazy Cheerios-with-chips whim. Or just order take-out or dial up room service. Children are welcome in the hotel restaurant, where there are high chairs. Packed lunches can be made, and the kitchen’s happy to heat up milk or baby food for you.

Babysitting

Nannies can be arranged locally, although prices vary depending on availability – ring ahead for details.

No need to pack

There’s plenty of flatware, cutlery and kitchen paraphernalia, so no need to bring special spoons unless you really want to. High chairs and cots are available on site. Kitchens have a microwave and blender, so you can rustle up your own baby food.

Also

A Studio is fine if you’re used to sleeping with your littl'uns beside you, but you might prefer a Suite if you want some undisturbed shut-eye. For maximum comfort with older kids, choose a two- or three-bedroom Residence to give you maximum flexibility and privacy.
