The Greenwich Hotel
- Style
- De Niro’s designer den
- Setting
- Soho-side Tribeca
Built from russet-hued hand-made bricks and embellished with reclaimed wood, Robert De Niro’s brand-new boutique hotel in Tribeca merges smartly and seamlessly with its surroundings, the hippest neighbourhood in NYC.

In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The N. Moore Suite and the Greenwich Suite each offer more living space than 95 per cent of NYC urbanites could ever dream of, and the 30-foot skylights merit a gawp (as do the rates). They’re each fitted with kitchens, offices and stone fireplaces. The Superior rooms are more economical options that are still luxuriously spacious – go for one with a view of the Greenwich Hotel’s Tuscan-style courtyard.
- Packing tips
- Your favourite suede slippers to put your feet up in the reading room – and something to read while you’re there.
- Also
- In a tribute to the hotelier’s artist father, Robert De Niro Senior’s Picasso-ish paintings line the walls of the lobby and drawing room.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- Ago, an outpost of chef Agostino Sciandri’s West Hollywood flagship, is a terracotta-tiled Italian eatery with a ceiling lined with an uncountable 90,000 corks. Pap-proof frosted windows keep away the distractions of the street.
- Dress code
- A-lister at ease; don’t wear a dark shirt or tie unless you want to be mistaken for one of the immaculately attired Italian waiting staff. (Or a Goodfella.)
- Top table
- Ask for one of the tables in the northwest corner; these are quieter than the spots around the bar and the building’s support columns lend the space some privacy.
- Last orders
- The restaurant is open until 11pm, but guests at the hotel can drink and dine round the clock.
- Room service
- Selections from Ago’s menu are available in-room 24 hours a day.
- Hotel bar
- Guests, glitterati and meedja moguls sup bellini martinis at Ago’s Parisian-style bar, which packs in the punters on weekend evenings. The wines and vodka menus are distinguished and lengthy, and if you’re into grappa, this is the bar for you.

Local restaurants
Nobu (+1 212 219 500) – which De Niro also has a stake in – is just down the road at the corner of Franklin and Hudson and is still serving immaculate sushi 10 years after it opened. Assuming you can get a table, naturally. 66 (+1 212 925 0202) on Church Street offers creative Chinese cuisine that's as impressive as the design, with foie gras dim sum and lobster noodles on the modern menu. The Odeon (+1 212 233 0507), on West Broadway is a local institution, and serves some of the best burgers in town to south Manhattan's champagne-chinking set.
Local bars
Attached to the Tribeca Grand Hotel on Sixth Avenue, The Sanctum (+1 212 519 6800) is spoken of in hushed Manhattanite tones for its cocktail innovations, stylish decor and fashionista clientele.
Diary
May De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival (yes, he basically runs the neighbourhood), attracts hundreds of thousands of cinephiles each year.
