At Bridport’s Electric Palace Brasserie (01308 428354), former River Cottage collaborator Gideon Hitchen rustles up simple, tasty lunches and dinners with fresh‑as‑a‑daisy local produce. In West Bay, The Riverside Restaurant (01308 422011) serves up the very best fresh fish in a charming seasidey setting; you’ll need a reservation.
Beach & Barnicott is a grade II‑listed gastropub in Bridport and a fine place for a cosy drink – with good food, too (01308 455688).
Book a table for lunch or have a cream tea at the Hive Beach Café in Burton Bradstock, an alfresco favourite with award‑winning ice creams and smashing seafood (01308 897070).
There are seaside and countryside walks aplenty from Bridport: take the Bull Hotel's dog Lulu out for a stroll if you need a sense of purpose – go for a sea‑breezy walk on the beach; inland, follow the Brit Valley Way, which starts at West Bay. Otherwise, enjoy gently ambling through town and wobbling from gastropub to antiquarian bookshop to tearoom. You're at the official Gateway to the Jurassic Coast, so fossil hunters are occasionally rewarded with rock-bound treasures uncovered along the strand.
Late June/early July Bridport’s annual Food Festival punches well above its weight, gathering top-notch regional producers, chefs and farmers together for a celebration of all things edible (www.bridportfoodfestival.org.uk).

All rooms are large enough for an extra cot or bed. Family Suites have two bedrooms and a sitting room. Children aged under two stay free; there's a £15 charge for children aged 12 and under, and £25 for children aged 13 and above.
Children can let off steam in the hotel's large garden, and play in a sandpit and willow wigwam in the courtyard. You can walk to the nearest beaches at Lyme Bay, or go on a fishing trip from nearby West Bay. Lulu, the hotel's dog, is well behaved with children and loves to be taken for a walk.
Children are welcome in the restaurant at all times, and the chef will prepare half-sized portions of anything on the menu. The kitchen is happy to heat up bottles and baby food, store children's food in the fridge and freezer, and provide packed lunches.
Babysitting can be organised at £10 an hour. Please give as much notice as possible.
A baby-monitoring service is available to guests using the restaurant and bar.
There are high chairs in the restaurant. Neal's Yard toiletries provided in the bathrooms are gentle enough for children to use.
Rooms all have TV and DVD players, and there are child-friendly DVDs to borrow, as well as toys. Be aware that the hotel's car park is quite small and gets full fairly quickly. There is a public car park only 50 metres away.
