In the know

Our favourite rooms
All of the farm’s rooms are en-suite, except the smallest, Bedroom 3, which has a private bathroom down the hall. All four of the rooms look out over the gardens and the woodland beyond, but the antique oak-beamed Loft Room – the largest and our favourite – has the widest aspect and is the only one with its own bath tub, a roll-top Darlington.
Packing tips
Dartmoor was made for ramblers, so be sure you’ve shoes for getting muddy and a suitably outdoorsy wardrobe.
Also
For a proper back-to-basics nature experience, Ask Sam and Jo to arrange a food-foraging experience for you, and set out on a Dartmoor expedition in gourmet survivalism.

Food & drink

Food and drink, Higher Westcott Farm hotel, Devon, UK
Hotel restaurant
Luckily for gastronomes, owner Jo Gossett used to manage a Conran restaurant in London, and has brought her menu-making skills to bear on Higher Westcott Farm’s kitchen. You’ll need to let the hotel know if you’ll be dining when you book (£30 for three courses), and Jo will send you a menu to pick from in advance. You’d be missing a treat not to dine here: Jo’s sublime home-style cooking features ingredients almost entirely sourced from Dartmoor’s farms. Classic Devon afternoon tea (£5) is served daily.
Dress code
Keep it simple and unpretentious – shapeless jumpers wouldn’t raise an eyebrow.
Top table
Dining is based around a communal oak table beside the fire.
Last orders
9.30pm is the last dinner sitting, but Jo is happy to prepare a late-night supper for late arrivals (by arrangement). Both she and Sam are usually around to man the bar until midnight, after which it works on an honour basis.
Hotel bar
There’s a dusky red leather-panelled 50s-style bar in the living room, which offers a wide selection of whiskies and cognacs, as well as a cellar of biodynamic wines (there’s a corkage fee if you bring your own).

Local restaurants

This is God's own pub-lunch country. The White Horse Inn (+44 (0)1647 440242) in Moretonhampstead is a atmospheric gastro joint in the heart of the village – the courtyard is particularly lovely in summer. The 13th-century Ring of Bells (+44 (0)1647 440375) in North Bovey and the thatch-roofed Artichoke Inn (+44 (0)1647 252387) in Christow are both rustic poster-pubs with enticing menus. Doddiscombeleigh's famed Nobody Inn (+44 (0)1647 252394) specialises in fresh seafood and has an appetising range of wines, whiskies and cheeses available. For more epicurean appetites, Michael Caines double-Michelin-starred restaurant at Gidleigh Park is only a short drive away.

Worth getting out of bed for

Sam and Jo have a detailed knowledge of the area around Higher Westcott Farm and are brimming with activity recommendations. They've a list of tried and tested country walks (and will pack you a picnic too). You can arrange to clamber around on rocky Dartmoor at the nearby climbing centre (www.rockcentre.co.uk) and the Farm can even set you up with guide to show the best routes. The region is riddled with rivers for canoeing and fishing; you can sling a 12-bore over your shoulder and try your aim shooting on the moors, and there are quad bikes available for all-terrain motoring – all these can be arranged by the hotel. Sam and Jo can also arrange food foraging excursions on Dartmoor, where you plunder the undergrowth for edibles, and organise lessons in the ancient art of falconry. Basically, if it involves wellies, hills or hunting, you can do it here.
