In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The Hartenburg suite offers more than enough room for romance, with an eight-foot bed and two free-standing roll-top baths and a monsoon shower big enough for a drinks reception. Each room is named after a wine-maker – Dom Perignon in the attic is, unsurprisingly, the hotel’s showcase suite.
- Packing tips
- If you’re in one of the larger suites, you can spin the TV to face either the bed or the bath, so bring along your favourite DVDs, lie back and relax.
- Also
- Rather than patio heaters and rain shelters, Hotel du Vin York has really pushed the boat out for cigar aficionado, with a heated, candlelit smoking ‘bothy’ where you can savour a selection of fine Havanas.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- Despite opening in late 2007, the hotel’s smart French restaurant has already earned ‘best eatery in York’-type accolades for its classic bistro dishes, and semi-psychic sommeliers.
- Dress code
- Svelte and slinky.
- Top table
- Any of the banquette tables in the bistro is a good spot, but make sure you snuggle into the generously cushioned sofa in the library for a digestif afterwards.
- Last orders
- Lunch is served from noon to 2.30pm, dinner from 6pm to 10pm. Residents can order drinks from the bar 24 hours a day.
- Room service
- Snacks and light meals can be supplied in your room, on request.
- Hotel bar
- As well as its sprawling, hand-picked (or is that nose-picked?) wine list, Hotel du Vin’s clubby, cranny-filled bar has one of the most colossal collections of malt whisky in Yorkshire.

Local restaurants
Local cafes
The Blake Head Vegetarian Café (01904 62376) on Micklegate is a quick stroll from the hotel, and serves light, fresh, tasty dishes to those of a non-meaty persuasion.
Worth getting out of bed for
The Mount, the area in which the Hotel du Vin is located, is leafy, affluent and pretty residential. Thankfully, the attractions of the historic centre, the Minster and (for relaxing after the sight-seeing) the olde-worlde ale pubs, are only a short walk away.
