At the rear of the hotel, looking onto the garden, Couvoisier has a king-size bed, freestanding rolltop Victorian bath in the bedroom and walk-in power shower. Tattinger has a four-poster, Louis Guntrum is a snug, quiet double; Marques de Caceres is a good-sized double.

Local restaurants

The Black Boy is a paraphernalia-decked pub serving good, hearty British food on Wharf Hill (+44 (0)1962 861754). Good for lunch or dinner, the Chesil Rectory on Chesil Street dates from 1450 (+44 (0)1962 851555), and serves modern European food. The Wykeham Arms is a traditional pub on Kingsgate Street (+44 (0)1962 853834), near the cathedral, whose owner collects hats; go for a pint and see.

Worth getting out of bed for

For panoramic views of the city, walk up to the top of St Giles’ Hill, especially pretty at sunset. Fishing for trout and other species on the River Itchen at the Weirs, or fly-fishing at Ovington. Wine tasting at Danebury (www.danebury.com) or Wickham vineyards (www.wickhamvineyard.co.uk). Clay- pigeon shooting, abseiling, quad biking and more at Marwell Activity Centre (www.marwellactivitycentre.co.uk).

Activities

The small walled garden is a safe haven for children to run around in. There are no special facilities for children, but the concierge is full of information on local child-friendly attractions, such as Winchester's steam railway and zoological park.

Meals

Children are welcome in the Bistro restaurant at all times, and half portions of the adult menu are available at half-price. Happy to heat up milk and baby food.

Babysitting

This is available at around £10 an hour, with a three-hour minimum. Please give at least 48 hours' notice.

Baby-listening

A monitor is available (there's only one, so it needs to be pre-booked) that links the bedroom to the parent's mobile phone.

No need to pack

There are high chairs in the restaurant. Children receive a complimentary Arran Aromatics toiletries set.
