Our favourite rooms
All three double rooms have state-of-the-art bathroom fittings, kingsize beds and neutral, contemporary decor. They're simple, uncluttered, and comfortable (so important after a large, delicious meal).
Packing tips

Food & drink

food and drink - The Wheatsheaf
Hotel restaurant
Everything that emanates from chef Lee Evans’ kitchen at the Wheatsheaf is a pure, unbridled joy. His eclectic menu marries British flavours with French élan. Just reading it will make you drool: dishes include seared scallops with boudin noir.
Dress code
Jeans and jumpers all round: comfy clothes are de rigueur – you don't want any tight waistbands or belts hindering your maximum capacity.
Top table
Outside, at a scrubbed wooden table on the terrace (which has stunning, soothing rural views); indoors, in the brighter room to the right.
Last orders
11pm. At lunchtime (noon–2.30pm), the à la carte menu is joined by a Garden Menu of grown-up gastropub offerings, including a Ploughman’s to die for, with plank-thick hunks of ham and wedges of tangy cheese, and fresh, home-made breads and rolls.
Room service
None, but drinks are still available to residents after the barman has rung last orders.
Hotel bar
This stylishly above-par pub has cider, local real ales and beers, plus a substantial cellar of European wines.

Local restaurants

The only licensed chocolate shop in the UK, The House of Minerva on Cheap Street in Bath (+44 (0)1225 464999) is the place to go if you want to accompany handmade truffles – whipped up in front of you – with a glass or two of champagne. If you’re still in Bath later on, try Beaujolais on Chapel Row (+44 (0)1225 423417), a relaxed, light-filled bistro and bar with a contemporary feel and changing seasonal menus. There’s even a secret terrace garden for dining en plein air. Up the stakes at Bath’s Michelin-starred eatery The Bath Priory restaurant on Weston Road, which has held its accolade for almost a decade (+44 (0)1225 331922). You’ll need a reservation.

Local bars

Within walking distance, The Packhorse Inn in Southstoke (+44 (0)1225 832060) is a charming 15th-century coaching inn. Park up at a bench in the beer garden and soak up the sun and the views with a pint of cider (and we don’t mean that over-iced luminous orange stuff).

Local cafes

The White Hart Inn on Widcombe Hill in Bath (+44 (0)1225 338053) is popular at lunchtime for its tasty and trendy back-to-basics lunches. For more bar and restaurant listings, see our Bath destination guide.

Worth getting out of bed for
