- Miss Ada has four-poster, red-velvet curtains and a throne toilet in the bathroom – really. The bed in Venus belonged to Judy Garland, with theatre curtains. Tudor Room has an open fireplace, stained-glass windows, a four-poster bed and a gallery.

- Suitable footwear for walking or jogging in nearby Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park.

- The candlelit bar, Bar 190, is more like an eccentric gentlemen's drinking den, and has excellent cocktails and a good, long wine list. A resident DJ plays music at weekends. There's a late licence, and no official last orders for hotel residents.

The Enterprise on Walton Street (+44 (0)20 7584 3148) is a cosy gastropub serving delicious British fare. Maggie Jones in Old Court Place off Kensington Church Street (+44 (0)20 7937 6462) has been a favourite for years, serving hearty English and modern food at a reasonable price. Their three-course Sunday lunch is filling and fantastic.Nightlife
The infamous Boujis on Thurloe Street (+44(0)20 7584 2000) is where the fashionable Kensington crowd flock. Get past the CCTV door inspection at Apartment 195, hidden away on King’s Road (+44 (0)20 7351 5195), and sip a cocktail on one of the bashed-up leather sofas.

Wow factor
The richly decorated Tapestry room has panelled walls hung with beautiful gilded mirrors and French verdure tapestries.
Need to know
Wedding ceremonies are conducted in the sumptuous Tapestry room, and receptions are held in a separate private dining space; the hotel can arrange all catering and flowers. Honeymooners usually stay in either the Tudor or Venus room.
