Local restaurants

The restaurants in the Witchery on Castlehill (+44 (0)131 225 5613) are extremely romantic. The restaurant of the same name is wood-panelled and candlelit; the Secret Garden is airy, with windows onto a terrace; both serve exceptional contemporary Scottish cuisine. Dome on George Street (+44 (0)131 624 8624), formerly HQ of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, serves traditional lunch and Modern Scottish dinner in a most impressive imterior. The cupola in the rear room overlooks a central circular bar: the Thirties cocktail bar on one side is loud and lively; the restaurant, on the other, is more refined and elegant. Oloroso on Castle Street (+44 (0)131 226 7614) inhabits a highly desirable rooftop space on George Street. Lounge bar, restaurant, private dining room and terrace all in one, it serves gourmet Mediterranean food, and a fantastic selection of sherries. Window seats are best. Top floor of the Museum of Scotland is Tower Restaurant on Chambers Street (+44 (0)131 225 3003), with castle views. The inspired Scottish menu features the best seasonal ingredients (oysters, seafood, game, Angus beef).

Local bars

Rick’s on Frederick Street (+44 (0)131 622 7800) is a venue worth dressing up for by night, where super mixologists deliver award-winning martinis. At lunch, it has a good brasserie menu. Dome on George Street, formerly HQ of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, has a Thirties cocktail bar on one side, loud and lively.

Local cafes

Circus Café is a deli-cum-restaurant, but also a good spot for coffee, particularly on the decking on a sunny day. For afternoon tea accompanied by an harpist, head to Palm Court at the Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street. A great place for coffee, cake and all things nice is Café
Florentin
(+44 (0)131 225 6267) on St Giles Street. Valvona & Crolla is a celebrated deli, and has recently opened Vincaffe in the designer shopping centre, on Multrees Walk. Montpeliers on Bruntsfield Place (+44 (0)131 229 3115) is a bar/restaurant that does the best breakfast.

Nightlife

One of Edinburgh’s most talked-about destinations is Opal Lounge on George Street (+44 (0)131 226 2275), 8,000 square feet of after-dark revelry, with candlelit leather-clad corners where you’ll hear sweet and soulful music on chilled nights, and upbeat party tunes at the weekend. Asian-influenced eats and a 03h licence. Oxygen on Infirmary Street (+44 (0)131 557 9997) provides wine-bottle-sized canisters of flavoured O2. There’s also an extensive wine, beer and cocktail menu for more substantial sustenance.
