In the know

Our favourite rooms
Each room is identified by its oversized bedhead, which consists of a panel printed with a culinary image. Cream of the food-themed crop is Chocolate, the biggest and most luxurious room, with a claw-foot roll-top bath and a big walk-in shower, but Green Olive and Chilli Pepper are large too. Spacious Strawberry has window seats, great for market-square people-watching. Top-floor rooms reflect the age of the building, with beamed ceilings and sloping floors; Marshmallow and Artichoke have lovely views. Raspberry and Oyster are small but sweet.
Packing tips
Wellies and walking sticks, jodphurs and riding crops, hip flask, and sticks for dogs to chase.
Also
The bookshelf-lined library brings old and new together in a fusion of gentleman’s club, plush bar and country house; definitely somewhere to retire after dinner for a quiet digestif.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant
Settle into a comfy high-backed chair and sample the attractive dining room’s substantial menu of simple, seasonal delights; we loved the melt-in-the-mouth lamb shanks and Oriental-style scallops.

As relaxed as you’ll feel after a long country walk.
Top table
At the back, by the window; in the bar, sit fireside in the smaller room.

Hotel bar
Take up residence in the airy main bar, where wood-burning fires, lived-in leather armchairs, cask ales, fine wines and an all-day grazing menu make whiling away a few hours all too easy.

Local restaurants

If you’re heading west to explore the countryside, The Broadway Deli on Broadway’s High Street (+44 (0)1386 853040) packs a mean picnic; look out for fruit-packed home-made jams and flaky-pastry pies. On the way back, Chipping Campden’s tiny-but-trad village inn Eight Bells is great for a Sunday roast or informal dinner; book a table on +44 (0)1386 840371. There's a nice terrace for alfresco feasting in the summer months. A more elegant evening itinerary would list pre-dinner bellinis at Hicks Brasserie in Cotswold House hotel (+44 (0)1386 840330), followed by an indulgent lobster-centred three-courser at The Kings’ restaurant (+44 (0)1386 840256), also in Chipping Campden. Alternatively, stay put at Cotswold House and sample the gamey fare at the hotel’s contemporary-artwork-bedecked signature eatery, Juliana’s Restaurant (+44 (0)1386 840330).

Worth getting out of bed for

Fall in love with Romeo and Juliet or chuckle over Much Ado About Nothing in the birthplace of the bard: Stratford-upon-Avon’s historic sites and acclaimed Courtyard Theatre are only eight miles away (www.rsc.org.uk). There are horse riding stables just four minutes from the George hotel, and staff can also arrange clay-pigeon shooting nearby. The countrside is lovely here, so a long walk will be very rewarding (particularly when it's followed by a lingering pub lunch).
