In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The Sukhothai’s 12 Garden Suites have romantic balconies overlooking the fairytale courtyard gardens and lotus ponds. They are also sexily splashed with livelier colours than the other rooms, although all suites and rooms are draped in rich Thai fabrics, with plenty of polished teak. Deluxe Rooms and Garden Suites have iPod docks and the enormous Sukhothai Suite, pied-à-terre to many a passing president, boasts a fitted kitchen and, most impressively, a grand piano.
- Packing tips
- Bring your gym kit – the health club, tennis and squash courts and nearby jogging tracks mean there’s no excuse for slacking; also, a good book to pretend to read when you’re celeb-spotting in the bar.
- Also
- Make sure you don’t miss the weekend chocolate buffet in the lobby salons, or the daily traditional khim (a kind of hammered dulcimer) recital.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- The Sukhothai has three. Celadon, spread over two temple-like open-air salas, serves justifiably famed Thai cuisine. La Scala serves tasty Italian and the Colonnade is an international restaurant where you can watch sushi-making and oyster-shucking.
- Dress code
- Unassailably A-list.
- Top table
- By the massive windows in the Colonnade, so you can gaze down at the water gardens and amazing replica temple stupas.
- Last orders
- The Colonnade is open for dinner until 11pm; the other two restaurants close at 10.30pm. The bar keeps the drinks (and the music) flowing until 1am.
- Room service
- 24 hours.
- Hotel bar
- The Sukhothai’s slinky Zuk Bar is the perfect venue for enjoying cocktails, wines and whiskies late into the night.
