Local restaurants

In Vejer, Café Bar Arriate, on Corredera, is a perfect tapas pitstop if you arrive on the late flight. For a more refined meal, walk just around the corner from Escondrijo to French restaurant La Vera Cruz on Calle Eduardo Shelly (+34 956 451 683). El Jardín del Califa on Plaza de España (+34 956 451 706) is part of La Califa hotel, and is a wonderfully romantic spot in which to enjoy Moroccan cuisine. La Brasa de Sancho on Calle Sancho IV (+34 615 591 919) is a great brasserie, and La Castillería (+34 956 451 497; only open in summer), in the neighbouring village of Santa Lucia, is renowned for its succulent steaks.

Local bars

For an after-hours drink, head to Janis Joplin and Bodeguita, which are side by side on Marqués de Tamarón. Everybody in Vejer tends to chat and drink outside these bars, so there is always a buzzing atmosphere at night.

Worth getting out of bed for

Netty and Nigel will help you with anything you need to know from going surfing to riding to the best walks in the area. The nearest beach is the long, wide beautiful stretch of El Palmar.

Diary

Semana Santa (Easter week) features candlelit processions and culminates in a bull-run on Easter Sunday. A week later, the men show off their horsemanship and the ladies their Sevillana dresses at the Feria de Primavera (spring fair). The summer fair (10–24 August) is busy and noisy and not for the faint-hearted.
