In the know

Our favourite rooms
Head for the Sky (Lounge) and book a room under the Level umbrella, on floors 20–28. The sting of these rooms’ higher prices is utterly soothed by the cluster of luxury extras they entitle you to – a private area serving complimentary healthy food all day, a playroom in which you can watch films or work up a sweat on the Wii, two comfortable conference rooms, a complimentary ironing service and the best views over the city. In your room, a ready-made iPod stocked with 900 songs, a Nespresso machine and your own private Wii will make you reluctant to leave. If you really want to splash out, book an Urban Suite and enjoy the sea room and 50sq m of space; or the penthouse Sky Suite, a mini-kingdom hovering over Barcelona’s skyline, which offers a bird’s-eye view of La Sagrada Familia and a butler on hand 24 hours a day.
Packing tips
Bikini, trunks and shades for poolside preening; dancing shoes for Barcelona’s nightspots (since the best ones are inside the hotel, Mrs Smith’s gravity-defying stilettos will be just fine).
Also
Begin your night out in the hotel’s bar lobby. At the weekend, a snake-like queue will form outside ME Barcelona, as locals and tourists endeavour to charm their way in. You can breeze right to the bar from your room and savour the city’s finest cocktails and DJs without even leaving the hotel.

Food & drink

Ibiza hotels: ME Barcelona, food and drink
Hotel restaurant
ME Barcelona has not one but two restaurants, each with its own distinctive look and flavours. The laid-back luxe and lively Sky Food Bar is on the first floor, separated from the bar area by looming glass screens in clashing colours. These make for an intimate, romantic feel. If conversation wanes, watch one of the old black-and-white movies projected on the walls or linger over the menu; the choice of traditional Spanish nibbles is a guaranteed conversation-starter. For loftier dining, head for the heights of the top floor and Dos Cielos restaurant, which serves up creative gastronomic delights in an open-plan, stainless-steel kitchen, with dazzling views over Barcelona. You can watch the chefs (led by Javier and Sergio Torre) as they go about their edible artistry. There’s a full wine cellar at one end of the restaurant.
Dress code
If you’re eating at Sky Food Bar, match your outfit to the décor’s understated glam and sport some casual chic. If you’ve chosen the high-octane Dos Cielos, whip out your finest Barcelona bling and dress like queen and king.
Top table
At Sky Food Bar, the more romantic, private tables are at the back, while the tables by the bar make for a more lively evening. The best tables at Dos Cielos are by the window; book one of these and drink up the views (along with the Rioja).
Last orders
Dinner is served in both restaurants till 11.30pm. The Sky Lounge Bar mixes its last cocktails at 1.30am, Sunday to Wednesday; and at 2.30am, Thursday to Saturday.
Room service
Room service is available 24 hours a day and includes organic and Continental breakfasts, pasta, soup, snacks, main courses and desserts.
Hotel bar
Sky Lounge Bar is a glimmering white space, punctuated with jewel-bright splashes of colour; lipstick-red walls, amber liqueurs glimmering behind the sleek bar, caramel and cappuccino sofas and glass screens in sweet-wrapper shades of emerald, blue, purple and pink. Admire the spotless DJ decks beside the bar, ready and waiting for when the sun goes down. Until then, there’s a carefully thought-out soundtrack of lounge music and jazz, verging into house by night. A music guru was consulted for the sounds and it pays off; there are no irritants in these playlists.

Local restaurants

For the finest, freshest fishy feast, sit beneath the wooden beams at El Pescadors (+34 932 240 004) on Plaça Prim and choose from salt-water wonders such as calamari, prawns, angler fish fricandó, tuna with pickled Figueres onions or hake with romesco bread and leek mousseline sauce. One of Barcelona’s most famous restaurants, Botafumeiro (+34 932 184 230) on Carrer Gran De Gràcia has seduced and sated foodies for more than 25 years with its traditional cuisine, culture and professional standards. The menu blends Catalan and Galician influences, with particular emphasis on seafood and sweets. If you prefer your snails on salad lettuce rather than garden lettuce, head to Los Caracoles (+34 933 023 185) on Carrer Escudellers. The restaurant, named after the garden-munchers, pays homage to them both in décor (mosaic snails adorn the walls) and in the menu. For the squeamish, there’s delicious paella and grilled chicken or fish. Agua (+34 932 251 272), on Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta, is one of the busiest and best seaside restaurants, thanks to its beachfront location and moreish Mediterranean cuisine. Admire the warm, welcoming colonial-style interior, but head for the highlight – the beautiful beachfront terrace right on the boardwalk. Be sure to try Agua’s unique coal-cooked rice. You can snack on tapas if you just want a mainly liquid dinner.

Local bars

You can’t get any more local than a bar within your hotel and at ME Barcelona, you have not one but two nightspots to choose from. Firstly, there’s the lobby’s Sky Lounge Bar; secondly, on the sixth floor, there’s New York import Angels and Kings. It’s dark, Victorian and edgy, and features opulent furnishings and graffiti-inspired artworks, a stage at the back and access to the outdoor pool.

Nightlife

Bestial (+34 932 240 407) on Carrer Ramon Trias Fargas is a minimalist and modern beachfront restaurant. Along with its Italian-influenced menu, the restaurant serves up cocktails and live music till 2am. Enjoy the excellent sea views as you sip a fruity creation or linger over limoncello sorbet in the wooden garden terrace. Be sure to admire the mural by Frederic Amat on the windows as well. The bar also has video-art exhibitions and open-air projections, so boredom is never on the menu. If you’re feeling spontaneous, head down to Villa Olympica and walk along the beach; the myriad of cabana bars (or chiringuitos) attract butterfly-flocks of good-looking locals and will keep you dancing till dawn if you so desire.

Worth getting out of bed for

Make the most of ME Barcelona’s YHI Spa, and treat yourself to an afternoon of pampering and a trial of the spa’s hydrotherapy circuit. Treatments are based around Aztec and Mayan rituals, and therapies and the organic products are locally sourced. There can be few things more relaxing and restorative than the spa’s underwater massage chairs, overlooking the ocean.

The hotel overlooks the 5.5 hectare Parc del Centrede Poble Nou, designed by architect Jean Nouvel. Enter the giant sustainable garden through a Gaudí-esque gate, promenade through its romantic forest and woodlands, and explore the old Oliva-Artés factory, which is by stunning willows, lianas and flowers of every description.

Gaudí’s famous work in progress, La Sagrada Familia cathedral, is just a short taxi drive from the ME Barcelona. Visit the museum inside and watch the stonemasons industriously carving stones to be used in the building, as the controversial continuation of Gaudí’s 1882 beginnings gathers pace.

Visit the old part of Poble Nou, which once housed fishermen within its narrow, winding streets. Despite all the recent renovations, the area has retained its traditional Catalan charm, and is a tranquil and attractive setting. Compared to the tourist trap of Las Ramblas in central Barcelona, Rambla de Poble Nou offers picturesque, tree-lined charm and local feeling. There are even age-old shops and bars to explore, and Mar Bella beach awaits you at the end.
