In the know

Our favourite rooms
Light trickles in over the window seats of the Sistermans Suite and twinkles off the antique mirrored headboard onto a silky buttercup-yellow bedspread – definitely a room to lose yourself in. Opposite the bed are twin porcelain sinks with silver mirrors above, creating a shimmering contrast with the sultry Waterland palette of the walls. The Admiraals Suite on the floor above has a freestanding bath, and the gentlemanly Persijnenkamer Suite on the top floor comes with a terrace looking out onto the Monnickendam rooftops and a hand-carved wooden sink.
Packing tips
A sketchbook and some watercolours to coax out your inner Vermeer.

Food & drink

Amsterdam hotels: Posthoorn, food and drink
Hotel restaurant
Champagne-coloured chenille seating, honey-hued chandeliers and butter-gold walls lend Posthoorn’s Michelin-starred restaurant an air of contemporary elegance. The chef produces excellent French cuisine and fresh seafood, such as lobster, is a speciality.
Dress code
Pearl earrings for the girls; velvet jackets for the gents.
Top table
Cosy up in a fireside spot in the winter months; in summer, the stone patio is great for alfresco dining and heaters make it an option in cooler months too.
Last orders
Meals stop being served at 22h, but there’s a snack menu available until 23h. The bar is open until 0h30.
Room service
Breakfast, snacks, drinks and – during restaurant hours – the full dinner menu can be served in your room from 9h to 23h.
Hotel bar
Cigars and aperitifs have been enjoyed in the portrait-lined, wood-panelled herenkamer since the 17th-century – add your name to the aristocratic roll call who’ve sunk into the leather armchairs, and sup on the signature cognac cocktail.

Local cafes

Marieke is a little chocolaterie/lunch room on Zuideinde that's an olfactory delight as well as a pleasure for the palate (www.chocolateriemarieke.nl).

Worth getting out of bed for

Talk to hotel staff about renting a fluisterboot (‘whispering boat’), these small, motored vessels are the ideal way to explore your Waterland surroundings. Proximity to the harbour also means watersports, such as sailing, are easily arranged. Again, the hotel can help.

Nearby villages Markem and Volendam are essential tick boxes on the Netherlands cultural tour; both over pretty wooden houses, traditional dress, and Edam cheese. On a sunny day, you can cycle to Markem in 45 minutes (you can on a rainy day too, but we wouldn’t recommend it).
