Offering serviced apartment living in the centre of Venice, I Qs is a contemporary reinvention of its mediaeval past; a smart and sassy design hotel that boasts views worthy of Canaletto.

Need to know

Rooms: Three suites and one studio.
Rates: €250–€625, including Continental breakfast.
Check-out: Midday. Later check-out is possible for an extra charge and subject to availability.
Facilities: Private pier, library, free WiFi throughout, laundry. In-room amenities: fully fitted kitchen, PC, flatscreen TV, CD/DVD player, free minibar, La Bottega dell’Albergo fig essence toiletries.
Children: Under-2s can stay for free, older children for €50 a night, on an extra bed. Cots are available for €50. Babysitting can be arranged in advance, at €15–€25 an hour.
Also: No smoking throughout. Small pets are welcome.

In the know

Our favourite rooms: All rooms have been elegantly designed according to different architectural styles, but preserving a twinkle of their medieval heritage. The larger Q3 and Q4 suites overlook the canal. Q4’s seven windows make it the lighter of the two, but we like the straw tatami flooring in Q3 – a thoughtful oriental touch that dovetails adorably with the bright white hues and all-glass Corian bathroom. Q1, the studio, can be annexed to Q2 to form a two-bedroom suite.
Packing tips: A map of Venice’s quirky, labyrinthine streets, otherwise you may never make it back to the hotel. (Make sure you leave behind all memories of Don’t Look Now.)
Also: I Qs can arrange breathtaking helicopter trips over Venice and water taxis to take you around the city from its private pier.

Hotel restaurant: I Qs doesn’t have a restaurant, but the area around it swarms with alluring eateries. Staff bring fresh milk, croissants and bread to your room every morning.
Dress code: Clean-cut Armani with a touch of Gothic.
Room service: You can arrange to have groceries delivered.
Hotel bar: None.

Local restaurants

For an authentic, no-frills trattoria experience, try Trattoria Alla Madonna at Calle della Madonna, 594 San Polo (+39 041 522 3824): from San Marco, cross the Rialto bridge and take a hard left – three minutes down the waterfront (past all the tourist traps), you’ll see Calle della Madonna on your right, with the restaurants yellow sign marking the spot. Order the seafood risotto (but don’t expect to find any seafood in it) and for a secondo, order any grilled fish. It's a great little slice of Venetian life (if a little rough around the edges).
