In the know

Our favourite rooms
The hotel’s Deluxe Rooms (the basic category) are genuinely great – spacious, sophisticated and smartly decorated in browns, creams, charcoals and taupes, and given depth by a variety of textures. The Art Studios are a little larger, but there’s not much in it and we’d rather have one of the Deluxes tucked away at the back of the hotel on the third floor, for maximum peace and proper wandering-around-in-the-nude privacy. If you do want to splash out, grab a Junior Suite for a private terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. Two of them are corner suites and therefore boast two glass walls, and tranquil terraces overlooking the green, green grounds.
Packing tips
Bring your Ayurvedic handbook so you can swot up on your ‘type’ and order the perfect complementary treatment in the Ananea spa.
Also
‘Gallery’ isn’t just a name; the hotel is packed to the rafters with sculpture and original artworks. It’s serious about relaxation too, with a tension-melting Jacuzzi, spa treatments galore, and daily yoga.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant
Cool, classic and contemporary, Wine Gallery serves well thought modern Med fare, with a nod towards its Greek culinary heritage. The charcoal pike fillet is a particular pleasure, as are the inventive salads.
Dress code
Complement the surroundings with elegant Armani ensembles or if in doubt go for head-to-toe black.
Top table
In the summer months, the Wine Gallery extends out onto the paved courtyard – nab one of the glass tables and a couple of oversized cream-cushioned armchairs and take dinner alfresco.
Last orders
The restaurant is open until 12.30am and drinks are on offer until 2am.
Room service
A variety of salads, sandwiches, pizzas and burgers, as well as a selection of more substantial entrées are available until 12.30am.
Hotel bar
Dressed in red and arted up to the nines, Pisco Sour specialises in Chilean cocktails (unsurprisingly), and hosts DJs on Saturday nights.

Local restaurants

Ekali is a little limited restaurant-wise, but upscale suburb Kifissia is a 10-minute drive away and in its centre, the buzzing Kefalari Square, is lined with luxe bars and high-end eateries. Restaurants in the area include Gefsis on Kifisias (+30 210 800 1402) and Varsos on Kassaveti (+30 210 801 2472), perfect for a lunch of spinach and cheese pies, divine rice pudding and their famous home-made yoghurt. If you're eager for more modern art after Life Gallery, then head to the Semiramis Hotel, where ever-changing displays await in glorious technicolour (the owner's one of the top ten collectors in the world); we clocked a Jeff Koons on our visit.

Worth getting out of bed for

In terms of culture, Athens pretty much invented it, so head to the city centre for your fill of museums, classical ruins, and tick-box attractions. For shopping without the stress of the centre, try boutique-lined Levidou Street in Kifissia for a quick credit-card workout. If that doesn't slake your sartorial thirst, the Mall in Maroussi is the second biggest in Greece and provides a home to both high-street and haute couture. The Boboniera cinema on Papadiamenti Street in Kifissia shows foreign films in their original language with Greek subtitles.
