Our favourite rooms
The intimate suite is spacious and stands on its own in the gardens; the bathroom has views of the lake. Tower rooms have romantic free-standing baths. Room 16 is the personal favourite of the hotel’s owner, renowned interior- designer Birgit Israel. Room 15 has a big sexy chandelier and overlooks the fountain and terrace below.

Open daily for lunch (dish of the day) and dinner (set menu; €48), the restaurant blends classic French cuisine with contemporary flair – rather like the hotel itself. There is also a wonderfully comprehensive wine list. A reservation is essential.

Formal, Michelin-starred Le Pré du Moulin in Sérignan-du-Comtat (+33 (0)4 90 70 14 55) has a rich menu of forest mushrooms, asparagus, Mediterranean seafood, and truffles, combined with aromatic Côtes du Rhône wines. In Uchaux, Côte Sud on Route d’Orange (+33 (0)4 90 40 66 08) is great for a lunch or dinner of fine gastronomy. Grillade d'Hélios on La Martine (+33 (0)4 90 40 61 81) is a casual and relaxed restaurant with hearty rustic fare and barbequed meat dishes.

Need to know

The kitchen prepares excellent food and can cater for up to 80 people. Celebrations usually take place in the secluded courtyard, but only 70 can be hosted comfortably indoors. A marquee can be arranged in the grounds for larger events.

All sorts of weddings have taken place here. Isabelle the wedding planner will be at the disposal of couples who choose Château de Massillan as the backdrop for their nuptials.

Recommended rooms

Rooms 10 and 23 have a sitting area separated by a door from the main bedroom. Both rooms are also a long way from the rest of the hotel bedrooms; ideal if baby is prone to waking in the night.

Activities

The grounds at this child-friendly hotel are huge, with lots of hidden nooks for playing hide and seek. Look for the swing hidden in the gardens.

Well-behaved children are allowed in the restaurant for all meals. There's no kids' menu, but the chef will whizz up an omelette or purée, or dish up small portions of the daily set menu.
