Les Rosées

Côte D'azur (east), France [view map]

Style
Romantic rural guesthouse
Setting
Côte d'Azur

Les Rosées boutique hotel – 400 years old in parts – blends luxury and intimacy with artistic flair: hand-made antiques and rich fabrics contrast with crisp linens and delicate tapestries to create an esoteric, magical vision of Provençal style.

Need to know

Les Rosées, need to know
Rooms
Four suites.
Rates
€250–€450, including breakfast and tax.
Check-out
Noon, but flexible, subject to availability. Check-in, from 3pm. The doors are locked at 10.30pm, so ring ahead if it looks as though you’ll arrive later.
Facilities
Outdoor swimming pool, gardens, library and a treatment room offering massages. In-rooms: free WiFi, CD player, iPod dock, minibar and Fragonard toiletries.
Poolside
The small, unheated (but sun-kissed) pool is set in the picturesque garden, down a set of stone steps from the house.
Children
Due to precious antiques and artefacts, Les Rosées may be more of an adults’ playground. However, an extra bed is available at €40 per day (cots for €20) and babysitting with a local nanny can be arranged, for €10 an hour.
Hotel closed
Never. Hand-made decorations, candlelight and window embroideries make Les Rosées a cosy Christmas hideaway too.
Also
Pets can come too, free. There are no TVs in rooms, but if going cold turkey becomes too painful, ask to borrow the flatscreen.

In the know

Our favourite rooms
With its honey-hued walls, a tower-shaped reading room full of natural light, a separate dressing space and a marble bathroom with shell-pink walls, Isadora is the most romantic suite. Spacious and contemporary Serguey is coloured with cool neutrals – and has the whole top floor to itself, a working fireplace and an open slate shower.
Packing tips
Comfy shoes for long walks, over-sized shades for a trip to Cannes (20 minutes away) and an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel for pool/fire-side reading.
Also
All suites are non-smoking, but the hotel has a cigar stash to accompany a glass of Cognac somewhere discreet.

Food & drink

Les Rosées, food & drink
Hotel restaurant
Only breakfast is served – consisting mostly of organic, fairtrade local produce. No Kellogs or imported goodies – just plenty of jam from the hotel’s kitchen and sweet, flaky sultana pastries.
Dress code
Chic and comfy: cool linens and espadrilles.
Top table
Plump for a breakfast table in the shadow of the tower, by the outdoor sofa.
Room service
There are no menus, rules or regulations; it’s a fluid affair. Ask, and they’ll try to help.
Hotel bar
No bar, but you can sample the hotel’s stash of rich Italian reds and medal-winning local whites (plus home-made orange or nut wines) under the shade of the olive trees, in your boudoir, or while nestling on squidgy velvet cushions in the living room.

Local restaurants

Book a table at Le Petit Fouet, at 12 place du Village (+33 (0)4 92 92 11 70). It’s a melange of beams, chandeliers, barmen crooning along to old French songs – and a parrot that peers down at you while you eat. The walls are lined with irresistible confitures, candles and loose-leaf teas to take home – and tables spill out onto a terrace. Take a trip next door to sample the foie gras at Resto des Arts, at Rue du Maréchal Foch (+33 (0)4 93 75 60 03), open from 7pm until late (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). If it’s lunch you’re after, pop into Le Bistrot de Mougins by the water fountain, in Place du Village (+33 (0)4 93 75 78 34). Bagsy a seat under the umbrellas outside – or for supper, nip down the steps into the cellar.

Nightlife

Sip a glass of sunset rosé and enjoy the incredible views from L’Abreuvoir Café 32 Place des Patriotes, Mougins 06250 (+33 4 93 90 03 05). If that’s full, pop next door for a capuccino and chocolate brownie at ivy-clad L’Amandier, or make a reservation for dinner – they’ll rustle you up a perfect parfait glacé Limonello (+33 4 93 90 0091). For a pre-supper tipple, perch at the bar of Restaurant la Mediterranee, then eat in the restaurant afterwards. They’re open for lunch 12h-14h30, and for dinner 19h–22h30 (closed on Wednesdays). Place de la Mairie, 06250 Mougins (+33 4 93 90 03 47).

Worth getting out of bed for

The Fragonard perfumery in Grasse, at 20 boulevard Fragonard (+33 (0)4 92 42 34 34), is worth a peek. It provides the toiletries at the hotel – and will create a bespoke scent for you too. The sweet-toothed should head to Confiserie Florian at Gorges du Loup, Tourrettes-sur-Loup (+33 (0)4 93 59 32 91). This bonbon factory offers free tours and tastings, and is a 35-minute drive from Les Rosées. While you’re there, stop and let your sugar rush subside at nearby Gourdon, the mediaeval village. The dramatic gorge is definitely worth a visit.
