Bring an exercise book for your Mandarin language notes – Urbn staff give lessons for beginners.
Also

Food & drink

Shanghai hotels: Urbn Hotels Shanghai, food and drink
Hotel restaurant
There’s a modern Danish design feel in RoomTwentyEight, partially thanks to the countless white lampshades in various sizes swinging from the ceiling. Urbn’s cuisine has an Australian flavour, with comfort-food classics such as sausage and mash and sticky date pudding on the menu.
Dress code
High-street chic (preferably in eco-friendly fabrics).
Top table
For the best views, book a table beside one of RoomTwentyEight’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the courtyard.
Last orders
Urbn’s restaurant is opening throughout the day, from a blinkingly early 5.30am until the kitchen closes at 11pm. Drinks are available in the lounge until 2am.
Room service
A 24-hour snack selection, with RoomTwentyEight meals available in your room during restaurant opening hours.
Hotel bar
As well as the slinky cocktail area adjoining the restaurant, there’s a thrillingly Bond-ish guests-only lounge on the rooftop accessed through a code-locked door in an innocuous concrete wall.

Local restaurants

Lynn Modern Shanghai Cuisine (+86 (0)21 6247 0101), on the junction of Nanjing and Xi Kang roads, serves tasty dim sum and contemporary Shanghainese dishes amid an opulent art deco interior. Visit at the weekend for one of the restaurant's renowned all-you-can-eat brunches.

Local bars

Head to the People's Park and sup mojitos by the lakeside at Barbarossa (+86 (0)21 6318 0220) , a flashy Moroccan-themed bar and restaurant with great cocktails, fruity hookahs, and a lovely terrace.

Worth getting out of bed for

Nanjing Road is home to some of the ritziest shopping in the city, especially at Plaza 66, where Shanghai’s well-heeled flock to for their fix of haute couture from brands such as Cartier, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. The French Concession area, where Urbn is located, is also great for a leisurely afternoon browsing the boutiques. If you’re after curiosities and knick-knacks, head to the Dongtai Lu market, but be wary that the word ‘antique’ is often used lightly in these parts, and be ready to slash 80 per cent off any price you’re quoted.  The People’s Park, at the eastern end of the road is a tranquil urban breathing space that houses the Shanghai Museum, where you’ll find the world’s largest collection of traditional Chinese art. At the Western end, the Jing’an Temple is famed for its 3.5-tonne copper Hongwu bell.
