In the know

Our favourite rooms
Hotel St Paul is justifiably proud of its Black Suite on the penthouse floor (where all rooms boast 13-foot vaulted ceilings). Floor-to-ceiling muslin curtains lend a dreaminess to the atmosphere around the bed, and tall, white, folding shutters let in plenty of light to counterbalance the charcoal tones of the walls and floors. Junior Suite 1005 also grabbed our attention – we loved the burnt orange velvety sofa and the huge shuttered windows. At very least, try to get a room looking out over old Montreal or one high up the building with a view towards the St Lawrence river.
Packing tips
Montreal’s winters can be bone-chafingly frigid, so dress up warm twice over. Some Cox heels will go down a treat in Vauvert restaurant.

Food & drink

Montreal hotels: Hotel St Paul, food and drink
Hotel restaurant
Smart, sultry Vauvert restaurant throngs with Montreal’s gastrophiles and bar-hoppers and has established itself as an essential fixture of the city’s after-hours scene. The seasonal European bistro menu never disappoints, and the risotto has acquired a citywide reputation.
Dress code
Suave and stylish – moody monochrome ensembles to match the decor.
Top table
Tuck yourselves away in the corner of the banquette row and keep an eye on the action at the bar.
Last orders
Dinner is served until 10.30pm each night, but on Thursday to Saturday nights, a menu of fricots (snacky tapas-esque bites) is available until 1am.
Room service
Vauvert’s meals can be enjoyed in your room during restaurant opening hours. The hotel can always order in from other eateries nearby if you’re peckish at other times.
Hotel bar
Montreal’s in-crowd lingers over cocktails at Vauvert’s long bar until 3am. Occasional DJs sweeten the mood.

Local restaurants

Unsigned, hidden down an old-town sid-street, and cunningly disguised as a fishing lodge, Le Club Chasse et Pêche (+1 514 861 1112) on rue St Claude is making waves with its innovative Qubecois cuisine. Expect new twists on old favourites (such as surf 'n' turf pairing lobster with Wagyu beef, sweetbreads or suckling pig), and a young, animated atmosphere. Also within walking distance of St Paul, Holder (+1 514 849 0333), on rue McGill, serves European brasserie style cuisine, complemented with an impressive wine selection. Meat-lovers should flock to Da Emma (+1514 392 1568), on rue de la Commune Ouest, an excellent Italian set in what was once a women's prison.
