Bedarra Island by Voyages
- Style
- Rainforest-hugged villas with a view
- Setting
- Great Barrier grandeur
Peeping through the trees at the sun-caressed beach postcard that is Hernandia Bay, the spacious, secluded villas of Bedarra Island are smart and simple modern hideaways where relaxation’s guaranteed.
Need to know
- Rooms
- 16 secluded villas.
- Rates
- AU$1,700–AU$3,250, including all meals, alcoholic and soft drinks, watersports activities and transfers to/from Dunk Island.
- Check-out
- 11am, but may be flexible, subject to availability. Check-in: 2pm.
- Facilities
- Massage room, in room spa and massage treatments, gym, tennis courts, boutique store, book, DVD, CD and games library. In rooms: LCD TV, Bose sound system with iPod dock, free minibar. The two Pavilion villas include laptops and broadband access.
- Poolside
- A freeform pool set into a terraced timber deck looks out over beach, with steps leading down to the sand. Decadent day-beds upholstered in black are shaded by huge parasols, and a thatch-roofed cabana houses the private hot tub.
- Children
- Over-12s are welcome, although the resort is more of a grown-up hideaway.
- Also
- Two-night minimum stay.
In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The two Pavilions (15 & 16) are honeymoon-perfect thanks to their relative seclusion and staggering ocean views. Each one features an oversized turquoise-tiled bathroom, walk-in wardrobes and a private wooden deck with its own lounger-lined plunge pool. ‘The Point’ villas 1 and 14 also have pools to themselves: 1 is closest to the beach, and 14 is elevated to make the most of the sweeping Hernandia Bay views. Of the smaller villas, 2, 3, 11, 12 and 13 have the best sea views.
- Packing tips
- White Missoni bikinis and giant sunglasses are the perfect complement to the black day-beds. Bring tennis shoes if you fancy any on-court action.
- Also
- Bedarra Island’s spa treatments (either at the therapy room at Wedgerock Bay or in the comfort of your villa) include deep tissue and hot stone massages, as well as a wealth of facial treatments and aromatherapeutic body rubs.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- The hotel’s Terrace restaurant is set in an open, conical building with towering ceilings, granite tables and stone flooring. Cuisine is seasonal Modern Australian with a French frisson, and though the portions are on the dainty side, the flavour packs a punch.
- Dress code
- Floaty, flowy beachwear.
- Top table
- High on the edge of the terrace overlooking the pool.
- Last orders
- Dinner winds down at around 9pm–9.30pm, but, since the bar is free and self-service, cocktails are a 24-hour temptation.
- Room service
- Not available.
- Hotel bar
- Adjoining the guest lounge and library where pre-dinner canapés are served every day, the help-yourself bar is set in a cosy conical annex with a round granite table in the centre. Although, most drinks are included in the room rate, there are a few off-the-list wines that cost extra.

Local restaurants
The hotel's Terrace restaurant is the only dining option on Bedarra Island – if you do want to eat elsewhere, you'll need to hop on a boat to Dunk Island, but with food this good on site, and the option of a private picnic on the beach whenever the whim takes, why bother moving?
Worth getting out of bed for
An assortment of activities are included in the hotel's rates: tennis (both day and night varieties), paddle skiing and catamaran sailing are all available free, fishing and snorkelling gear are available, and motorised dinghies are on hand to spirit you away to a deserted beach for a gourmet picnic. Reef scuba and snorkelling trips cost extra, as do spa treatments.
