In the know

Our favourite rooms
It's hard to have favourites with just three pavilions of such knockout quality. But if you insist, head over to Hideaway for even more pampered privacy. Attached to the main house, Treetops has upstairs-downstairs options, and a bathroom each for Mr & Mrs Smith, including a freestanding bath. All pavilions feature separate dressing rooms, combustion log fireplaces and king-size beds; decor is a soothing mix of natural and patterned fabrics, recycled timbers, super-luxe furnishings, and local art and artefacts.
Packing tips
Penknife for whittling fallen angophora branches; jazz classics sheet music to play on the white mini-grand in the cocktail bar mezzanine.
Also
Pretty Beach is also the name of the rather swish new CABO 38 Express sports cruiser available for charter throughout your stay. Cruise round to blissful beaches and charming coves where you can snorkel, swim, fish or just enjoy your very own Stefano Manfredi picnic hamper. Does life get much better than this?

Food & drink

Pretty Beach House hotel, Central Coast, Australia
Hotel restaurant
Meals can be served à deux or communally in the atrium-style dining and lounge area in the main house, or in your room, on your private deck, or indeed anywhere in the seven and a half-acre grounds. Vintage leather chairs, fine Belgian linen, chic Riedel glassware and a huge original Arthur Boyd await you in the main dining area. Chef Stefano Manfredi's menu is classic Modern Italian – fresh, seasonal, elegant, hearty. Expect local crayfish with garlic mayonnaise, veal shank with faro, traditional bacon from butcher Pino Tomini-Foresti and bread baked daily at the property. Kid-friendly dishes can be whipped up too.
Dress code
Well-pressed linens, outsize resin jewelry and designer clogs.
Top table
Eating on the timber deck by the infinity pool puts you at the heart of the property with dress circle views.
Last orders
Food is served all day 'casalinga' style, with a more formal evening dinner available, but staff will always try and accommodate the needs and whims of guests if earlier or later grazing is required.
Room service
Fresh fruit, biscotti, cakes, tarts and antipasti can be brought to your room 24-hours a day.
Hotel bar
An intimate cocktail bar sits tucked away on a mezzanine level off the main living area, replete with white mini grand piano if you fancy tickling the ivories. There's also a great wine cellar for quaffing the old stuff. The bar is only open to guests, so has an exclusive feel, with chef Manfredi even choosing the mood music on the iPod playing in the background. Don't miss the signature Aperitif cocktail, with campari, gin, fresh lime and cranberry juice served straight up martini style or as a long drink over ice.

Local restaurants

With fabulous all-inclusive food and drink on tap, it's unlikely you'll want to wander beyond Pretty Beach Hotel's boundaries. Woy Woy is 20 minutes by car, or Sydney 90 minutes' drive away, if you feel the need to decamp, but restaurants in the local area are limited. Bells at Killcare Restaurant, at the boutique hotel of the same name, is the exception, close by at Killcare Beach in the Bouddi Peninsula, with cooking by acclaimed chef Stefano Manfredi, who also oversees Pretty Beach's menus. The 70-seat dining room opens out onto a massive outdoor deck overlooking sleek gardens, with fresh coastal decor blending blue and white colours with sand-hued rattan seats. There are two private dining rooms (The Wine Room and The Garden Room), as well as a cocktail bar, with a wine list strong on Australian and Italian labels. Food is seasonal, featuring fresh local oysters and seafood, homegrown vegetables and herbs, and daily-baked bread, and Italian-inspired (the team make their own pasta and gelatos). The result has already bagged a coveted chef's hat (+64 (0)2 4360 2411; www.bellsatkillcare.com.au).

Worth getting out of bed for

It's hard to think why you'd tear yourself away from the food and the views, but if you do get the urge to stretch your pins, try a guided walk through the Bouddi Peninsula (included in your room rate) or just head past the great old sandstone rock at the back of the property – with its very own Aboriginal carvings – and stroll over to private Tallow Beach, ocean-side, home to a surf break. For the full Jackie Onassis treatment take the CABO 38 Express sports cruiser out for a spin in the Brisbane Waters or round to the hidden, empty beaches of the peninsula. Serious Ernest Hemingways can try the Blood & Thunder Game Fishing Charter and wrestle with the kings of the ocean – marlin, tuna, shark. With a top speed of 38 knots and all the latest thermal imaging fandango, they don't stand a chance. Bespoke expedition packages are available on request, and staff can also advise you on other local destinations, from Lobster Beach and Box Head within walking distance, to Killcare and Maitland Bay beaches, and the seaside villages of Killcare, Wagstaffe and Hardy's Bay, all close by.
