Aeolian Islands, Sicily Overview

Italy

Coastlife
Earth, wind, fire and water
Coast line
Lazy days, active volcanoes

The ‘seven sisters’ of the volcanic Aeolian Islands are scattered like stars across the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily.

Once believed to be the home of Aeolus and Vulcan, the god of the winds and the god of fire, they are now worshipped by island-lovers drawn to the cobalt waters, secret coves, brooding volcanoes and windswept mountainsides. The islands mix elemental forces in extraordinarily variety: the fiery volcano of Stromboli; black-sand beaches of sulphurous Vulcano; glamorous bougainvillea-framed hideaways on Panarea; the lush vineyards of Salina. Serene and peaceful and yet volatile and capricious – a playground fit for the gods.

Absolutely Aeolian Islands, Sicily

Hire a boat to reach the secluded coves and grottoes that line the coasts of the archipelago. The harbours are full of local operators ready to charter, or ask your hotel to arrange a vessel.

Local knowledge

Taxis
Golf buggies on Panarea (hold on tight!); three-wheeled Vespa pickups on Vulcano. Taxis can be scarce and somewhat undependable. Get your hotel to order one for you.

Tipping culture
A service charge is often added to restaurant bills, but an additional tip of ten per cent is usual for good service.

Packing tips
Only Lipari has good banking facilities so make sure you arrive with enough cash in your pocket. Salina is popular with mosquitoes; pack some repellent.

Recommended reads
The Leopard by Giuseppe di Lampedusa.

Cuisine
Dishes make extensive use of fragrant herbs and locally produced capers. There is a big focus on fresh fish and squid; the Aeolian speciality of scorpion fish is fantastic. Don’t miss the sweet Malvasia wine.

Currency
Euro.

Dialling codes
Country code for Italy: 39. Aeolian Islands: 090.

Do go/don't go
Spring and autumn are warm and tranquil. July and August can be very busy and prices soar. Ferry and hydrofoil services are sometime cancelled, particularly in winter, due to heavy seas.

Viewpoint
The summit of Fossa delle Felci, on Salina, has super views over the neighbouring islands. Head to the prehistoric ruins of Punta Milazzese on Panarea for a view over the picture-perfect cove of Cala Junco.

Arts and culture
The Greeks and Romans, whose ruins dot the archipelago, believed the islands to be the home of Vulcan, the god of fire. Volcanic activity has influence life on the islands for millennia, and created dramatic and beautiful rock formations, from soft silvery pumice to black obsidian.

Something for nothing
The neighbouring islands will have a grandstand view when Stromboli stops rumbling and smoking and finally blows its top. If you’re lucky you can see lava jet from Stromboli from the safety of a boat offshore. Organised night-time trips and boat rental are available from the village of Scari.

Shopping
Opportunities to shop on the islands are largely limited to beachwear and the occasional jewellery shop. Make sure you stock up on the islands’ capers and deliciously sweet Malvasia wine, particularly in Salina.

And...
The crystal-clear waters make diving and snorkelling extremely popular. Rinella, on Salina, is popular for speargun fishing. Lisca Bianca off Panarea has excellent dive sites. Boats of all kinds can be hired in the ports.

Diary

First weekend of June The bizarre Caper Festival in Pollara, Salina, is a fiesta of food, music and street games in the main square, all in honour of the humble caper. 15 August Pilgrims visit the Santuario della Madonna del Terzito south of Malfa on Salina for the Feast of the Assumption 21–24 August Lipari’s Feast of St Bartholomew is celebrated with processions, parties and fireworks. First week of October Food and Wine Week in Salina showcases the island’s excellent cuisine.

Cafés

The Tartana Club

As with most islands, it is the harbours of the Aeolian Islands that have a buzz of activity as the day’s catch of fish or tourists are unloaded. This is one of the best places in the archipelago to sit and watch the spectacle. In summer, fashionable folk gather here for cocktails, music and dinner.

La Sirenetta Park Hotel, Via Marina 33, Stromboli

Restaurants

(+39 090 981 1002)

Filippino

The islands’ most famous restaurant, frequented by celebrities such as Sting and Naomi Campbell, is an unprepossessing century-old family-run fish specialist. Try stromboli – black squid-ink risotto with fish, chillies and tomatoes, while sitting on the jasmine-scented terrace.

Piazza Mazzini, 98055, Lipari, Isole Eolie (closed on Mondays and during winter)

(+39 090 983 032)

Albergo Ristorante Da Pina

‘Da Pina’’s pergola is a hot spot, great for trying house specials such as fish all'acqua pazz and gnocchi with aubergine. There’s an extensive wine list, but they won’t serve it by the glass, so dining here is an all-or-nothing affair.

via San Pietro, Isola di Panarea, Messina

(+39 368 668 555)

Trattoria Maniaci Pino

This small-but-perfectly-formed eaterie serves some of the most honest and super-fresh seafood in the Aeolians. Definitely worth making the effort to find its remote location.

Gelso, Vulcano

Bars and clubs

This is the place to head to watch the world go by while enjoying drinks from the huge menu and live music.
