Hôtel Americano
Style Mesh-covered mod enclave
Setting Chelsea arts district
Sporting a façade shinier than the top of the Chrysler Building, Hôtel Americano makes a striking statement. A multinational love child of Mexican architecture, Manhattan modernism and Japanese serenity, the boutique hotel manages to create a refreshingly natural feel. Located in Chelsea’s gallery district within feet of the High Line, it’s a favourite for the fashion set, who love to sun themselves by the rooftop pool, or be seen on the back terrace nibbling on the restaurant’s French-meets-Latin-American cuisine.

Hotel restaurant
The Americano’s menu is as culturally cross-pollinated as its decor. Chef Joseph Buenconsejo prepares French dishes with Latin American accents: classic French lobster salad has distinctly South American touches from quinoa and salsa verde, and the burger is topped with poblano peppers and avocado.
- Dress code Casual, but worldly. Rompers have been spotted.
- Top table In good weather, stake a spot on the back terrace, where a bright Americano sign and blossoming trees make this slice of Manhattan more like a film set.
- Last orders The restaurant serves until midnight.
- Room service The kitchen creates a series of clever bento boxes, available from 7am until midnight. One combines guacamole, tacos and refried beans; another neatly compartmentalises a burger, coleslaw, ketchup, chips and pickles.

Hotel bar
Americano’s Lobby Bar is open from 7am until midnight, with breakfast pastries to start the day, and an enticing line-up of European beers to start the evening.

Our favourite rooms
Each room type is modeled after a Japanese ryokan, with a platform bed and minimalist furniture, but the Studio Suites are the most spacious, with a chair, a fireplace with gel-burning fire, and a soaking tub. Opt for rooms 85 or 95 to catch the most sweeping skyline views. Upper-level Uptown Queen rooms have bird’s-eye views of the High Line.
Packing tips
Hipster glasses to help fit in with the gallery-hopping art crowd; botany books for identifying native plants along the High Line.
Also
No frumpy robes here. Kick off your clothes and try on Loden Dager’s soft, slightly distressed denim bathrobe, and a pair of felt wool slippers. Even the striped Imabari washcloths add to the bath appeal.
