Midlake
The Trails Of Van Occupanther
When? You fancy a sing-along
Why? You’ll find glorious choruses aplenty
This’ll be in a few of the more discerning best of ’06 lists. Hailing from George W’s home state of Texas might not be a reason to love ’em, but their winning soft rock sure is. Firmly and happily stuck in the Seventies, Midlake’s forte is a great line in tuneful melodies and soaring vocal harmonies all laid around enough hooks and sharp lyrics to ensure this a place in the most cynical of hearts. For what Midlake lack in edge, they make up for with warm vintage rock à la Neil Young or Fleetwood Mac proving that that decade of bell bottoms and lava lamps wasn’t all bad. |

Fat Freddy’s Drop
Based On A True Story
When? You fancy placing a large ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on your door
Why? It’s perfect for jumping on the bed to
It seems like Fat Freddy is on a mission to lift your spirits and instil positive vibrations around the world. In fact, that’s exactly what this seven-piece collective from New Zealand have been doing since creating the debut album you are privy to. Shacked up in their basement studio a pebble’s throw from Wellington’s Lyall Bay Beach, this gang of young musicians have shaped a contemporary sound that belies their love of reggae, ska and soul. It’s a winning formula that has seen them grow to cult status across Europe through appearances at festivals such as the Big Chill. |
