The Loon

When? The barman’s been persuaded to keep pouring

Why? It's tailormade for a late-night lock-in on the JD

If you don’t like your music raw or full of twanging guitars, turn away now. If you were ever partial to Pixies: drop everything, sit down and pay attention. Tapes ‘N Tapes are the latest (and best) indie-rock outfit from across the pond to make an impression. Hailing from Minnesota, the band have turned out an album packed to bursting point with energy, soul and originality, all held together with the raw charm of the Pixies, Violent Femmes and a young Talking Heads. Stick with it: this is the spiky but sparkling sound of now

The Smith classic

From A Basement On The Hill

When? You're frolicking with your beloved

Why? Songs have rarely been this free-spirited

Given his rich musical legacy, this could be a controversial choice for Smith fans (no pun intended) who might well hold albums such as Either/Or close to their hearts. Released a year after his sad demise, From A Basement On The Hill was an incomplete work, during the recording of which he took his own life. Yet it doesn’t suffer from the unsatisfactory feel that most posthumous collections emit. It’s a joyous string of acoustic, sometimes fuzzy, but always free-spirited songs that show why Smith was loved by so many music fans, from indie kids to folk revivalists to film-makers such as Gus Van Sant. The tumbling pop of ‘Let’s Get Lost’ is reason enough to seek this out.
