In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The popular 'X-Large' corner rooms – they're bigger and have great balconies. 'Sunset' rooms on the second and third floors have views of Sunset Boulevard and the Hollywood hills; most have a balcony or patio. 'Medium' rooms all have a patio or balcony, and more attractive views over the city or poolside; go for a city view if you want a quieter room, as rooms facing the pool can be noisy. 'Large' rooms have two double beds and private balconies with LA views to die for. The suites are killer, with wrap-around balconies, panoramic city views and a shower big enough to throw a small party in.
- Packing tips
- Lots of swimwear. Leave the suit at home, you'll feel totally out of place wearing one here. Massive shades, however, are vital for poolside and street cred.

The Standard Hollywood
Los Angeles, United States[view map]
- Style
- Serenely hip hangout
- Setting
- Sassy Sunset Strip
The Standard Hollywood has all the makings of a real starlet: it's sexy, unconventional and groomed to perfection. You'll love everything you lay eyes on at this incredibly hip hideaway – including the performance art (lithe models casually but nakedly reclining in glass tanks) and retro-fabulous diner (leather booths and gourmet burgers). Rooms feature metallic silver bean bags, cool blue colour schemes and Warhol-print curtains – no wonder they shot scenes for Sex and the City in one of them.

Food & drink

- The restaurant, just off the lobby near the hotel entrance, is styled as an ultra-hip diner, with overstuffed leather booth seating and a high counter and dishes up international comfort food, from sushi to lasagne via the great American burger.
- Dress code
- Keep it casual – and a little bit sexy.
