Our favourite rooms: All rooms are well appointed with crisp decor and utility-chic bathrooms; nine feature glass panels that flick from frosted to clear at the flick of a switch. Superior rooms have Juliet balconies (we like room 103) or French windows that open onto little decks. Deluxe rooms are larger – 205 has big bay windows. Three rooms have a bath – request one when booking if this is a must for you; the Deluxe room with a bath also has a balcony, making it one of our favourites.

This boutique hotel in Royal Tunbridge Wells may have glossy looks, a stylish bar and sleek trappings, but it still offers a welcome that’s warm and intimate. The Brew House Hotel is the perfect base for a relaxed girlie weekend of shopping and pampering, or romantic outdoors capers: Kent's vineyards, castles and countryside are all on your doorstep.

Rates: £150–£195, including full English breakfast.
Check-out: 11am (but flexible, depending on arrivals). Check-in, from 3pm.
Facilities: Free WiFi, laundry, in-room massages. In rooms, flatscreen Bang + Olufsen TV, coffee machine, feather mattress topper, Egyptian cotton bedlinen. Bathrooms have underfloor heating, oversize showers and Hermès toiletries.
Also: No pets, but guide dogs are happily accommodated. No smoking throughout.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: Number One has quietly elegant interiors and a fantastic brasserie menu of Europhile favourites; chef Andrew Giles uses British ingredients such as Falmouth Bay oysters, Wealdway cheese and Kentish apples. There's also Sam's, the hotel's new American diner to satisfy any kitsch, burger-based yearnings.
Dress code: DvF by night; denim by day.
Top table: See and be seen at a window table, or go for table towards the back for cosy tête à têtes
Last orders: 2.30pm for lunch; 10pm for dinner; The restaurant closes at 3.30pm on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in winter. Sam's is open until 9pm.
Room service: 24 hours; choose from the full Number One menu during kitchen hours, or a lighter snack menu when it is closed.
Hotel bar: Both the restaurant and the diner have a bar area.

Also worth knowing

Children: Welcome: extra beds (£15 a night) and cots (free) can be provided in Superior or Deluxe rooms; there is a children’s menu in the restaurant.
