Our favourite rooms: There are three superior rooms with sea views in the main house. We liked the junior suite, room 7, room 6 for the view, and room 5, a large sea-view room. In the Beach Retreat Cottage, which can be rented as a whole or in part, Driftwood 1 on the ground floor is a large suite; Driftwood 2 a small double – book both together if you're bringing the kids. Upstairs, the Pebble Suite comprises a spacious double and a lounge with a sofa bed.

A one-of-a kind Victorian mansion with a minstrel’s gallery, stained-glass windows and big-sky views over the Solent and the Isle of Wight, Westover Hall Hotel is an amazing property in its own right. The warm atmosphere and just-so feel of this boutique hotel's period interiors are all thanks to its owners – Christine and David Smith.

Need to know

Rooms: 11 rooms, one Loft Suite and the Beach Retreat Cottage, which can sleep up to eight.
Rates: £206–£266, including breakfast and tax. Loft apartments sleeping two to four cost £266–£362 a night, including breakfast and tax. Cottage rooms are £126–£266 for two.
Check-out: 11am; midday by prior arrangement.
Facilities: Beach hut for guest use; massage can be pre-booked.
Also: No smoking in bedrooms or restaurant. One-night stays on Saturdays cost £20 extra.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: The two-Rosette One Park Lane restaurant serves superb Modern European food Thursday to Sunday. The more laid-back Vista Bistro is open seven days a week and offers simpler – but equally tasty – fare. Breakfast is served 7.30am–9.30am; 10am at weekends.
Dress code: Nautical but nice.
Top table: Ask for a sea view.
Last orders: Dinner 8.45pm; drinks 12.30am.
Room service: Until 10pm.
