Local restaurants
This is God's own pub-lunch country. The White Horse Inn (+44 (0)1647 440242) in Moretonhampstead is a atmospheric gastro joint in the heart of the village – the courtyard is particularly lovely in summer. The 13th-century Ring of Bells (+44 (0)1647 440375) in North Bovey and the thatch-roofed Artichoke Inn (+44 (0)1647 252387) in Christow are both rustic poster-pubs with enticing menus. Doddiscombeleigh's famed Nobody Inn (+44 (0)1647 252394) specialises in fresh seafood and has an appetising range of wines, whiskies and cheeses available. For more epicurean appetites, Michael Caines double-Michelin-starred restaurant at Gidleigh Park is only a short drive away.

Worth getting out of bed for
Sam and Jo have a detailed knowledge of the area around Higher Westcott Farm and are brimming with activity recommendations. They've a list of tried and tested country walks (and will pack you a picnic too). You can arrange to clamber around on rocky Dartmoor at the nearby climbing centre (www.rockcentre.co.uk) and the Farm can even set you up with guide to show the best routes. The region is riddled with rivers for canoeing and fishing; you can sling a 12-bore over your shoulder and try your aim shooting on the moors, and there are quad bikes available for all-terrain motoring – all these can be arranged by the hotel. Sam and Jo can also arrange food foraging excursions on Dartmoor, where you plunder the undergrowth for edibles, and organise lessons in the ancient art of falconry. Basically, if it involves wellies, hills or hunting, you can do it here.
