Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa is drenched in history: Lord Byron married Annabella Milbanke here in 1815, and the ancient stones of Hadrian’s Wall are a short drive away. However, this is one design hotel and its Serenity Spa face resolutely towards the future. As the William Pye water sculpture in front of the clifftop house in North-East England declares, Seaham and its facilities are as 21st-century as they can be.

Need to know

Rooms: 18 suites and a penthouse, most with sea views. Ground-floor suites have private terraces.
Rates: Midweek, £250–£550; weekend, £300–£595 including use of the spa, VAT and Full English breakfast.
Check-out: Midday.
Facilities: The Serenity Spa, fully equipped gymnasium. Use of the spa comes at no extra costs – only treatments are extra.
Also: Smoking only permitted on the terrace. Pets not welcome. Two-night minimum stay at weekends.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: The menu in the restaurant changes daily. Ozone, the Thai brasserie and juice bar, serves fresh wok-cooked dishes, juices and energy drinks all day. Breakfast is from 7am to 10.30am.
Dress code: Spruce up for dinner.
Top table: Any window table overlooking the terrace.
Last orders: Food: 9.30pm. Bar: normal licensing hours.
Room service: 24 hours for light snacks.
