Our favourite rooms: Among the many contemporary rooms, we preferred the courtyard rooms. Provence and Opium have private terraces. Rouge et Noir is sultry and atmospheric. The Dovecote is very romantic, private and split-level. Anais is also very romantic.
Packing tips: Loose-fitting trousers/skirt.
Also: You can de-stress in the Japanese Tea Garden. Le Manoir can also provide you with decadent picnic hampers for two to take into the surrounding countryside.

Le Manoir is the biggest and oldest house in a very small, very quiet Oxfordshire village, and sits regally among beautiful lawns, walled 17th-century and Japanese ponds, and its own extensive herb and organic vegetable gardens, which are heavily featured on Raymond Blanc's magnificent menu. You feel caught in a lovely time-warp, with nothing on your mind but fine dining. It's a child-friendly hotel, too.

Rooms: 32, each individually designed.
Rates: Midweek, £395–£1,050; weekend, £435–£1,200, (this usually includes breakfast, but check when booking).
Check-out: 11am (any later depends on availability).
Facilities: Helipad, croquet lawn, bikes, 26 acres of grounds.
Also: Kennels for pets. In-room spa treatments available.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: With two Michelin stars, the food is as spectacular as you might expect: try the 10-course menu Decouverte. Relax over breakfast from 7.30am to 10am.
Dress code: Très élégant.
Top table: By the windows overlooking the garden. For lunch, in the conservatory.
Last orders: Dinner: 9.45pm; 9pm for the menu Decouverte. Bar: open all night.
Room service: 24 hours.

Other facilities

Children: Actively welcomed. Cots are free, extra beds: £45 (not available in deluxe or standard rooms). There is a special menu, and a day’s cooking course for children (£225), La Petite Ecole de Cuisine. Babysitting and nanny services available. more info
