The first thing to say about the Balmoral is ‘no, not that one.’ Despite the hotel’s regal demeanour, Her Majesty is yet to bed down in the Windsor Suite. If she were ‘taking the waters’ in the spa town of Harrogate, however, she’d do well to book a room at this refreshingly opulent outpost – we daresay it’s a darn sight more comfortable than its Scottish castle namesake. Three Victorian terrace houses in a leafy side street have been knocked together, spruced, styled and shaped into the most exciting boutique bolthole in Yorkshire. Inside, Edwardian antiques share space with black crystal chandeliers, intricate Venetian mirrors, and black Nina Campbell flock wallpaper, a hodge-podge of ancient and modern that somehow blends into one seamless, decadent whole. Rooms are generally spacious, with a liberal sprinkling of four-poster beds, blood-red leather chesterfields, and gold rococo mirror frames. Trust us, HRH would love it.
