The exterior of Prestonfield is simple and understated – your average 22-bedroom country manor. But the interior has been designed with an outright disregard for minimalism. Swathes of woven fabric wallpaper, plush curtains, an incredible collection of antique furniture, intricately carved ceilings, ruby, gold and jet-black colours – it’s pure modern decadence.

- 24-hour, but there is a reduced menu after midnight, serving smoked-salmon sandwiches, cheese and biscuits, steak, Caesar salad.

- There are four bars, all with open fires: the Yellow Room with black crocodile banquettes; the candlelit Tapestry Room; the Whisky Bar, which has 100 malts on offer; and the Leather Room.
