Cornwall, United Kingdom[view map]

Local restaurants

Rick Stein’s foodie empire is an hour’s drive away in Padstow, but worth the trip (+44 (0)1841 532700; www.rickstein.com). A few miles along the coast in St Mawes is the Hotel Tresanton (+44 (0)1326 270055) for superb local and organic food. The Driftwood (+44 (0)1872 580644) for wonderful fish and seafood.

Local bars

In Portloe itself, opposite the hotel, is the Ship Inn, which serves good pub food (+44 (0)1872 501356). The New Inn in Veryan has a slightly less traditional menu (+44 (0)1872 501362).

Worth getting out of bed for

The bay is great for a refreshing dip (watch out for the lobster pots) or a bracing coastal walk. Tate St Ives (+44 (0)1736 796226; www.tate.org.uk/stives) is a gallery worth visiting. The Eden Project (+44 (0)1726 811911; www.edenproject.com) is an experimental biosphere with the largest conservatories in the world. In high season, get tickets through the hotel to avoid queuing. A trip to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth (+44 (0)1326 313388; www.nmmc.co.uk); the foot ferry leaves St Mawes Harbour every 20 minutes.
