A gothicky, Thirties-built château, yards from Brighton's seafront, the South Coast outpost of this hotel group with a knack for refurbishing interesting properties, has a sea-green exterior, just the colour of the Channel (visible at the end of the street). It’s a bubble of comfort that you can lose yourself in, rain or shine. And, although it’s heaven for wine-lovers, you don’t have to know your chardonnay from your Châteauneuf-du-Pape to feel at home.

Rooms: 34 rooms, two junior suites, one loft suite.
Rates: Doubles from £150; superiors are from £160; junior suites from £255; the loft suite costs from £325. Breakfast is not included. There is a two-night minimum stay at weekends.
Check-out: 11am weekdays; 11.30am weekends (extended on request).
Also: Small dogs can stay for a £10 charge but aren't allowed in the bistro or public areas.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: Eclectic Modern European food: wine-lovers very well catered for. Relax over breakfast between 7am and 10am weekdays, 8am and 11am weekends.
