Just got back from Metropolitan Bangkok – large by Mr & Mrs Smith standards – but with wonderful service and a great restaurant. Spotlessly clean and managed to retain a personal ambience in a fairly large environment.

Bangkok – not quite what I expected. Too quickly becoming another faceless place (Boots, Pizza Hut just round the corner). There are still some treasures to be found – the night market is worth a visit; food is excellent – just need to buy coupons which you can get there. Also the Mango Tree is a really good restaurant, but avoid eating at Sirroco – food overpriced and average. The view. however, is excellent so just go for cocktails and, girls, you need to have a slight heel otherwise they can be very fussy about letting you in!

While staying at The Metropolitan in Bangkok we had the breakfast served at the Cy'an restaurant by the pool – it was fantastic. The Blue Elephant restaurant was also very nice, and Spring (+66 (0)2 392 2747) served fantastic food, with a cushioned area outside to eat in. Bangkok is an exciting city – so easy to get around, with such reasonable taxis.

I would definitely recommend visiting the Vertigo Grill & Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree Bangkok, which is literally around the corner from the Metropolitan. The open-air bar and restaurant is on the 61st floor, so there's a great view to be had of all of Bangkok, either day or night.
