Remarkably Ronda, Andalucia

The beautiful Palacio Mondragón was once the residence of Ronda’s Islamic rulers. Extensively added to over the centuries, it has exquisite water gardens teetering precariously on the edge of the precipice. Walk there along the ridge and Calle Tenorio, by way of the Plaza de Maria Auxiliadora, to enjoy the best views.

Eating, drinking and dancing

We've tracked down the best cafés for people-watching, the bars with the coolest cocktails, the most accomplished restaurants and the liveliest local nightlife in Ronda, Andalucia.

Restaurants

Pedro Romero

Named after the famed bullfighter and right opposite the bullring, on bullfighting days it's almost impossible to get a table here. Sit under a stuffed bull's head and dine on garlic soup followed by a huge choice of meat or poultry dishes.

Calle Virgen de la Paz, 18

Almocábar

A tiny, family-run restaurant off the beaten tourist track, Almocábar specialises in innovative takes on traditional food. Located on Plaza San Francisco, by the city wall entrance, ask owner/chef Manuel Arias Jiménez for his recommendations. It’s best to book – this place is small!

C/ Ruedo Alameda, 5

Casa Maria

Diagonally opposite Almocábar, Casa Maria is a favourite in summer, with waiters dashing through the traffic to serve tables under the laurel trees by the fountain in the square. It’s not cheap, but the number of Rondeños flocking here is testament to its quality.

Plaza Ruedo Alameda 27

Casa Mateos

Come to this traditional tapas bar and try their speciality seafood, Serrano ham and Spanish cheeses.
