More details

Primland is BIG: it takes close to half an hour just to drive across the estate. As you make your way through the main gates, you’ll see signs that introduce you to the natives: whitetail deer, wild turkeys and berry-seeking bears.

At the hotel

Spa, observatory, wine room, games room (with Wii, Xbox 360, ping pong and billiards), gym, tennis courts, Highland Course, DVD and CD library, library, spa and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: flatscreen TV, fridge, wet bar, coffeemaker, CD/DVD player and L’Occitane or Culti bath products.

Our favourite rooms

For panoramic views of the golf course backed by the azure haze of the mountains, it's hard to beat the Pinnacles Suite. Housed in a repurposed grain silo, which also holds the library and observatory, this two-storey suite has a spiral staircase leading to the loft bedroom. We also love the Mountain Suites with rich hard-wood flooring and plush leather couches. Room L15 has the largest balcony and the best views. In search of a more scenic family reunion? Book one of the three Fairway Cottages between the 10th and 18th holes – there’s space for up to 16 people; each one has its own putting green.

The heated and chlorine-free indoor pool opens onto a lounger-dotted terrace with a fire pit which can be booked for catered private parties.

Packing tips

Forget stilettos and fancy duds and don cosy sweaters and knee-high riding boots. Bring night-vision goggles to catch the nocturnal wildlife in action.

Natural, American-Indian healing therapies and organic products are used in all spa treatments such as the lemon verbena body polish, a 60-minute exfoliating treatment. Afterwards, the therapist will reveal which animal describes your personality.

Very welcome, with plenty of child-friendly distractions on offer. Cots and beds can be added to rooms free and babysitting is available for US$20 an hour with 24 hours’ notice.

Hotel Restaurant

American-French fusion-fuelled Elements is the formal option; all glass-enclosed fireplace, linen tables and Wagyu beef. Crispy bass with Tuscan ham, grits and shrimp is a menu highlight, and the butter topped with Pop Rocks is a shouldn’t-work-but-does revelation. The casual option, 19th Pub, serves an all-day Southern menu of salads, steaks and chicken wings. Stop by Stables Saloon for prime cuts of grass-fed beef and cocktails (opens seasonally). The spa serves lighter fare, such as ahi tuna and melon, yoghurt, fruit and fresh juices.

Hotel Bar

Soundtracked with a mix of country, folk and indie, the 19th Pub offers a laid-back spot to unwind after you wrap up your game. Pull up to a tall table and order a beer, single malt or creative cocktail. Take your tipple out to sip by the fire pit on the terrace. Stables Saloon’s mixologists are happy to shake up your favourite drink; beer and wine are available as well.

Last orders

In Elements, grab breakfast before 10am and book your dinner slot between 6pm and 10pm; pull up a stool at 19th Pub from 11am to 11pm. Stables Saloon cocktail shakers are in motion from 6pm to 9pm, Thursday to Saturday.

Room service

Order fresh fruit, hush puppies with smoked maple butter, spinach salad with goat’s cheese, Kobe beef burgers and more, between 7am and 11pm.

Local Guide

Eat, drink, see, do: local favourites and more…

Worth getting out of bed for

There’s so much to do here, you’ll find few reasons to venture off the estate. Identify celestial bodies through the powerful telescope in the observatory. The Highland Course lures leisure and pro-golfers with its challenging design and unbeatable views. Anglers can reel in wild trout along six craggy miles of the Dan River on guided catch-and-release fly-fishing excursions. If you’re in search of calmer, more solitary pursuits, head to Duck Pond, one of the three stocked ponds; there’s a charge of US$6 to keep your catches. Hunters can find sustainable prey such as whitetail deer, pheasants and wild turkeys on guided excursions, and are welcome to bring their own dogs and guns. Or practise your aim the eco-friendly way any time of year at the lodge’s 14-station sporting clay area; prices start at US$15 each. Whether you’re an avid trekker or a stop-and-smell-the-roses rambler, there's a nature hike for you. The most difficult is the 2.5 mile Buzzards Roost Trail. Geocache your way along winding trails to find containers with details of past cachers and log your own trip. Take a guided ATV tour of Primland that has you bouncing through the trees. Bump along the terrain on two wheels on a mountain bike. Take a tour of the twinkling heavens on a starwalk with a local astronomer. Pick-up free tennis balls and racquets and take to the two on-site tennis courts. Forget the puny trees of your youth and scale massive trunks and branches with a Blue Ridge Tree Climbing guide (US$100 for three hours). Outside Primland, sample the local flavour on a tour of Château Morissette Winery. Try the Parkway Chardonnay, Star Dog sparkling wine or the blackberry wine (+1 540 593 2865; Taking its name from the cross-shaped stones found here, Fairy Stone State Park – about an hour from Primland – is perfect for picnics and pond swimming.

Local restaurants

The sweet and smoky barbecue sauce is made from scratch at Two by Two BBQ, about seven miles from the lodge (+1 276 952 2277; Try the country ham and biscuits with moonshine honey butter at historic Mabry Mill Restaurant in the eponymous settlement, about 15 minutes from Primland at Milepost 171.5 (+1 276 952 2947; After a tour, stay for dinner at Château Morrisette Winery off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, between Mileposts 171 and 172, 30 minutes from the hotel (+1 540 593 2865;

Local cafés

As you make your way from Charlotte Airport to Primland, stop off in Mount Airy, North Carolina, about an hour away, to get a Barney Burger and milkshake at Barney’s Café, named after the bumbling sheriff of the Seventies sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. Griffith grew up in this sleepy town (+1 336 786 8305).

Mr & Mrs Smith have just returned from a stay at this Blue Ridge Mountains boutique hotel, and as soon as they've unpacked their pig candy and sweet wine, a full account of their US luxury country break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick snapshot of Primland in Virginia …

Admittedly, it’s a bit of trek to Primland, but magic is worked over the course of the trip. Somewhere along the way it hits you: head-clearing mountain air, wildflowers by the road, mountains topped with fluffy clouds: you could be approaching heaven, if heaven were a luxury mountain retreat. The 30-minute ride from the gate to the front door of the lodge introduces you to this pastoral paradise. The road is lined with azaleas, towering trees and the odd wild turkey.

This luxed-up lodge consists of suites with mod cons such as automated light fixtures and mosaic-tiled bathrooms with Dornbracht fittings and cathedral-ceilinged cottages with massive flatscreens, Tennessee fieldstone fireplaces and fully equipped kitchens. In Elements, the formal dining den, chef Andrea Griffith crafts modern American-French fusion food such as Wagyu beef with pureed potatoes and crispy striped bass while diners savour views of the Highland Course. If you’re here to hit the links, be sure to swing by 19th Pub for post-game cocktails and five-truffle chicken wings.

Fill your days with outdoor activities: climbing trees, hunting, riding ATVs or horses. Unwind in the spa with a body mask or massage with organic oils. Browse tomes on American-Indian culture on the leather couch in the window-lined library within the repurposed grain silo. Study star-lit sky through the lens of a high-powered telescope in the observatory or on a starwalk with a resident expert. No matter how you spend your time, when you’re homeward-bound and heading for the gate, you’ll have to fight the urge to turn around.
