Mr & Mrs Smith have just returned from a review trip to this boutique hotel in Marrakech, and just as soon as they've unpacked their silks and spices, a full account of their stay in Morocco will be with you. In the meantime, just to whet your wanderlust, here's a swift snapshot of Riad Azzar…
Riad Azzar’s owners clearly have a passion for Africa – souvenir artefacts from their extensive travels on the continent can be seen everywhere: pottery and statuettes nestled in illuminated alcoves in the fire-warmed lounge; traditional Moroccan slippers augmenting the walls; intricate hand-carved cedar furniture dotted around the rooms and suites – the hotel is a hymn to African craftsmanship. It’s also a phenomenally relaxing environment. Despite the hustle of the medina and the bustle of Djemma el Fna being but a short side-street stroll away, the riad maintains an unassailable air of serenity, only ever punctured by the call to prayer from nearby mosque. At the centre, a beautiful jade plunge pool is flanked by potted greenery and wrought iron tables where guests sip mint tea. Rooms are unexpectedly spacious, clean, white spaces complemented by colour-matched blankets and curtains. Some have open fireplaces, decadently draped four-poster beds, or carved wooden balconies. Free from TVs or technological distractions, Riad Azzar sets out to be a soul-settling stay in the heart of one of the world’s most exciting cities. Mission more than accomplished.
