Typically Yucatan Peninsula

The Mayan ruins of Tulum are not the finest examples of the Mayan art and architecture, having been built long after the civilisation went into decline, but their spectacular location overlooking the azure Caribbean Sea more than compensates. It was near here that the Mayans first encountered the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.

Getting there

Holidays on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Planes, trains, automobiles, or maybe even helicopter – we tell you the best way to go.

Planes
Cancun International is the main regional airport, with direct flights to and from the UK. Alternatively, you could fly in via Miami, which is only an hour away by plane. The taxi ride to Playa del Carmen takes around 45 minutes and costs about $60; Tulúm is about 90 minutes away – the taxi ride will cost around $100.
Boats
There are ferries almost every hour from Playa del Carmen to the coral cay island of Cozumel, where there’s some excellent diving and snorkelling on Palancar Reef; the trip takes 55 minutes and you can buy tickets at the ferry pier. If you want to hire a boat, walk along the beach of Playa del Carmen and speak to any of the small boat owners.
Automobiles
It’s worth renting a car to explore further afield, although taxis are very reasonably priced.
