This rustic retreat offers the unique opportunity to stay in genuine Malayan stilted wooden houses, most more than a century old, on a former coconut plantation. Surrounded by manicured greenery and centred on one of Langkawi’s most celebrated restaurants, Bon Ton Restaurant & Resort has long been an essential stop-off for the savvy traveller.

Rooms: Eight traditional Malay houses.
Rates: RM490–RM1,160, depending on size of house; rates include Continental breakfast.
Check-out: Midday. Later check-out can be arranged if rooms are available.
Facilities: Free internet in restaurant area, art and textiles gallery, cigar room, private dining room, massages, books, magazines, DVDs and music. In-room amenities: TV, DVD/CD player, tea/coffee-making facilities, toaster, fridge.
Poolside: Flanked by palms, the pool and Jacuzzi area is a sliver of blue and white cut into the grass and the sunloungers provide views of mountains and coconut groves.
Eco-friendly: Bon Ton’s owner, Narelle, also runs the private animal shelter next-door; she uses profits from Bon Ton to fund work at the centre.
Also: Pets are welcome. Smoking is allowed throughout.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: The renowned restaurant, Nam, blends Eastern and Western cuisine with a dose of spice to create an imaginative and inventive gourmet menu. Plump for Nyonga, the signature platter, which features nine Malay and Chinese dishes served on banana leaf.
Dress code: Laid-back loungewear.
Top table: To secure a front row seat for the sunset, nab Table 1, 2 or L6 and watch water buffalo cooling off in the lagoon while you eat.
Last orders: Nam offers lunch until 5pm, mezze until 7pm and dinner until 11pm. Drinks are available until half past midnight.
Room service: The Nam menu is available in-room until 11pm.
Hotel bar: Chin Chin lounge bar is based beside Nam in a 60-year-old wooden Chinese shop house, filled with antiques and atmosphere. Liqueur-coffees and cocktails are specialities – grab a Short Island Iced Tea to enjoy on the sunset deck.
