In the pretty hilltop town of Cortona, Pane e Vino on Piazza Signorelli (+39 0575 631 010; closed on Mondays) serves hearty local dishes and has an extensive wine list. In nearby Marciano, book a table upstairs under the painted ceiling at La Vecchia Rota (+39 0575 845 362), which serves excellent pizzas. L’Agania on Via Mazzini in Arezzo (+39 0575 295 381) serves traditional local cooking. Try the tagliatelle, and creamy polenta with the classic Tuscan sauces. A little further afield, Pizzeria di Nonno Mede on Via Camporegio in Siena (+39 0577 247 966) has great pizzas and super views of the black and white Duomo.
