Morrison

Dublin, Ireland[view map]

Local restaurants

Browne’s brasserie (+353 (0)1 638 3939) for French cooking in a romantic setting. Jacob’s Ladder (670 3865) for Modern Irish cuisine. Chapter One (+353 (0)1 873 2266) for contemporary Irish cuisine and award-winning service. Eden (+353 (0)1 670 5372) for seasonal, organic food in Temple Bar.

Local bars

Spy (+353 (0)1 677 0014) is a cool NY-style bar and club. The Café en Seine (+353 (0)1 677 4567) has the longest bar we have ever been to; it took us ten minutes to walk from one end to the other on a busy night. Kehoe’s (+353 (0)1 677 8312) in South Anne Street is a traditional pub. Duke’s of Duke St (+353 (0)1 679 9553) is one of Dublin’s many literary drinking dens. Dawson Lounge (+353 (0)1 677 5909) is supposedly the smallest pub in Ireland.

Local cafes

The best brunches are at the Mermaid Café (+353 (0)1 670 8236) on Dame Street, or the Elephant & Castle (+353 (0)1 679 3121) in Temple Bar.

Worth getting out of bed for

Dublin is home to thousands of musicians and bands, so check local listings (www.dublin.local.ie). The Guinness factory tour (408 4800; www.guinness-storehouse.com). Harvey Nichols has just opened in Dublin, at the  the new Dundrum retail centre (291 0488), 5km south of the city centre. As well as luring you with all its designer offerings, the café and First Floor restaurant, cocktail lounge and after-hours DJ-fuelled dancefloor are all set to be popular hotspots.

Diary

March St Patrick’s Day (www.stpatricksday.ie). July the Witnness music festival (www.witnness.com).
