Our favourite rooms: We love the uninterrupted ocean views from Room 2’s cushion-lined outdoor area, as well as the Hemingway-esque writing desk on Room 3’s porch, from where you can admire both crash waves and luxuriant greenery. More adventurous Smiths should try the two-floor Lumbung Sasak house in the village, which has a bathroom and sitting room on the ground floor and bedroom upstairs – it was originally used for drying rice.
Packing tips: Bring your dancing shoes: Puris Mas’ owner, Marcel de Rijk is a former ballroom dancing world champion, and delights in giving personal lessons to resort guests.
Also: The outdoor showers are Balinese in style, so be prepared for the overhead-water-jug-with-removable-cork type of ablution.

Owned by a champion ballroom dancer and animal lover (look out for cockatoos, dogs, monkeys and porcupines outside the master villa), Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa's twin resorts are peaceful escapes into traditional Indonesian living. The two sites – one chilling in the jungle, one basking on the beach – are both set in meticulously manicured gardens and contain a boutique array of traditional thatched suites and villas, all filled with ornate features, Lombok antiques and intricate carvings.

Need to know

Rooms: The village site has three suites; the beach resort has 21 rooms, suites and private pool villas.
Rates: US$85–US$450, including full American breakfast; excludes tax and service charge at 21 per cent. NB American Express is not accepted.
Check-out: Midday, but Puri Mas strives to be as flexible as possible.
Facilities: Spa, dance studio, dive centre, library, DVD selection, free WiFi in rooms and resort hotspots. In rooms: TV/DVD player on request (standard in Superior Pool Villa), fridge, dial-up internet (IDR0.520 a minute).
Poolside: A new infinity pool at the beachfront resort overlooks the ocean and the island of Bali beyond. Over in the Village, a mushroom-shaped lap pool is watered by a stone frog fountain.
Also: You can smoke on your terrace. There’s a three-night minimum stay during high season (July–August).

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: The sea-side Sunset Beach Restaurant delivers a diversity of dishes from Indonesia, Asia and the Western world. Fresh seafood is a specialty, and you’d be foolish to miss the traditional Dutch-colonial risttafel, a mammoth tapas-style platter.
Dress code: Light, bright linens and floaty silks.
Top table: You can’t beat dining alfresco on the beach for romance, but the berugak open-air pavilions set across from the main dinging area come a close second.
Last orders: Sunset Beach closes at 11pm, but snacks can be provided if you’re arriving at Puri Mas later.
Room service: Restaurant meals and snacks can be enjoyed in your room between 7am and 11pm.
Hotel bar: Head for the Sunset Beach bar at dusk to watch the sun go down and savour a gleefully exuberant Puri Mas Flaming Cocktail.

Also worth knowing

Children: Cots are free. Under-12s stay free if sharing their parents’ bed; extra beds are US$15 a night. Staff can be booked to babysit for $5 an hour. Puri Mas is more of a tranquil couple-ish haunt however, and will only accept kids over 12 from April 2010.
