When breeze blows through the grounds of Constance Le Prince Maurice, which takes its name from the Dutch pioneer of the spice trade, the air carries the aroma of sun-warmed nutmeg – a gentle reminder that the temperate climate of home is a long way away. Balinese-style suites, made of dark teak and thatch, and shaded by coconut palms, are dotted throughout sizeable grounds, and these are never more than a leisurely stroll away from the spa, restaurants and bars – ideal, as temperatures on Mauritius regularly rise into the energy-sapping mid-seventies.
